Son Heung-min gives response to Bentancur’s claims after recieving his applogy
Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was left to make a grovelling apology to team-mate Heung-min Son on social media after making a “bad” comment about South Korean people.
The 26-year-old hit the headlines last week when he appeared on TV show Por La Camiseta in his native Uruguay.
Bentancur was asked by host Rafa Cotelo for a Spurs player’s shirt, to which he replied: “Sonny’s?”
However, he then followed that up by saying: “It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
His comments attracted widespread criticism on social media after a clip of the interview started circulating and later took to his own Instagram to issue an apology to his club captain after the fierce backlash.
He wrote: “Sony brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke! You know [that] I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you brother!”
Son has drawn a line under the incident
Heung-min Son up until this morning has been silent about the incident, at least in public but has now released a statement on his Instagram story.
The Tottenham forward revealed he has spoken to Bentancur about the situation and stressed that no malice was intended by the Uruguayan.
Son wrote: I’ve spoken with Lolo. He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised.
“Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.
“We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre season to fight for the club as one.
In other news, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to battle rivals West Ham United for the services of Youssouf Fofana.
Fofana had an impressive season at AS Monaco and on the back of his consistent performances, he was named in France’s Euro 2024 squad. With his contract running out in the summer of 2025, he has been linked with a move away from the club.
According to a report from Corriere Torino via SportWitness, Tottenham are ready to rival West Ham in the race for the services of the French international.
The North London club have had an impressive start to life under Ange Postecoglou and in order to take the next step, they are looking to reinforce their squad in the summer. They want to make key additions in different areas of the pitch and Fofana is one of the names on their radar.
With Pierre-Emile Højbjerg likely to leave, Spurs need to bring in a midfielder who has a physical presence and can contribute at both ends of the pitch. The AS Monaco star prefers playing as a central midfielder but he can also start in a deeper role if needed.
Tottenham are one of the teams always on the lookout for opportunities to strike bargain deals and with Fofana’s contract running out in 12 months, he could be available for a bargain fee of around €20-30 million.
While the North London club are keen on his signature, they will have to battle rivals West Ham United. Julen Lopetegui’s men are also looking to reinforce their midfield and they could make any potential move difficult for Spurs.
Fofana only came on as a late substitute in France’s Euro 2024 opener and if he does end up getting more minutes during the month-long tournament, the interest in his services could increase further.
