Tottenham Hotspur may consider renewing the contract of their South Korean star, Son Heung-min, by activating an extension clause. Speaking to Football Insider, former player Alan Hutton emphasized the strategic importance of not allowing Son’s contract to run down. The 31-year-old attacker’s current deal extends until 2025, with an option for the club to prolong it by an additional 12 months. However, Tottenham has not yet made an official decision regarding this clause.
Hutton believes that triggering the extension would be a wise move for Spurs, as it would ensure they can maximize Son’s transfer value if a future sale becomes necessary. He highlighted Son’s critical role at Tottenham, noting his significant contributions both as a striker and from the left wing. Hutton stated, “I think the club has put the clause in his contract to safeguard them. They’ll go and take that option up. It’s happening, 100%. He’s huge for Spurs. That will give you two seasons – and if someone comes in for him in that time, you can get a fee that Tottenham feel he is valued at.”
Son has been an important figure at Spurs since joining the club, and under manager Ange Postecoglou last season, he stepped up his game as captain. Filling the void left by Harry Kane, Son finished as Spurs’ top scorer with 17 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances. His performance underscored his importance to the team, both in terms of leadership and attacking prowess. Since joining Tottenham, he has scored 162 goals and assisted another 84 in 408 games.
Currently in the final year of his contract, Son’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain despite ongoing discussions about a possible extension. By activating the extension clause, Tottenham would secure an additional 12 months, giving the club leverage in potential transfer negotiations and ensuring they could receive a transfer fee reflective of Son’s true value if a suitable offer arises. Hutton concluded, “I think he’s still got a lot to give, whether that’s in the striker position or from the left. We don’t know what Tottenham are going to do with the striker position. We’ve had the rumours linking them with Toney, and I don’t know how true that is. We need options. But Son is the captain, and to let him run down his contract – I don’t think it makes sense for anybody.”
