Ange Postecoglou Hits out on Premier League frustrations amids new Euro 2024 VAR controversy which involves regular English officials
During ITV’s Euro 2024 coverage, Ange Postecoglou expressed his displeasure with the blocking tactics that had impacted Tottenham’s set-piece defense last season. Postecoglou, who is in Germany for the tournament, was providing punditry alongside Roy Keane and Ian Wright during the round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark. Early in the first half, Germany scored when Nico Schlotterbeck headed in a Toni Kroos corner, only for the goal to be disallowed due to a foul by Joshua Kimmich.
Kimmich had clearly obstructed Andreas Skov Olson, Schlotterbeck’s marker, allowing the Borussia Dortmund defender a free run at the ball. Postecoglou seized the opportunity to draw parallels with Tottenham’s experiences, noting that his team had suffered similarly last season. “I was really frustrated in the Premier League this year; we were on the end of a few of them,” Postecoglou remarked. “It’s a fine line between when they are sort of blocking intentionally the person who ends up scoring the goal. Again, there has to be a bit of cleverness around it.”
Throughout the season, Postecoglou had highlighted the issue, providing the PGMOL with evidence of obstruction against Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, during set-pieces. He specifically mentioned incidents in matches against Everton and Manchester City. “I think we have sent some stuff to get some clarification,” Postecoglou stated in February. He continued, “I’m probably behind the times, and maybe there’s been a rule change, but there’s definitely been a shift as I see it where we’ve definitely had two goals, maybe three, [against us] that maybe in the past would have been fouls on the goalkeeper, and it’s not just in our games, I’ve seen it in other games too.”
Postecoglou’s comments during the Euro 2024 broadcast underscore his ongoing concern about set-piece blocking, a tactic he feels is not being adequately addressed by referees.
