He suggested that the fee might need to be a world record for a defender, potentially exceeding £80 million.
In a podcast for Last Word on Spurs, Jacobs stated: “Tottenham don’t want to lose Romero, and that’s the most important point. So, barring some insane astronomical bid, there’s very little chance that he’s going anywhere. An astronomical bid would be comparable to what Everton are valuing Jarrad Branthwaite at or the fee Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire from Leicester, which is £80 million. It would pretty much be a British transfer record for a defender if Tottenham were even to consider it.”
With three years remaining on Romero’s contract, Tottenham are in a strong position for any potential transfer negotiations. However, before his contract dwindles down to two years, Spurs should prioritize extending his deal. Although Romero loves playing for Tottenham and enjoys the respect from the fans, he may eventually seek to add more trophies to his collection, including his World Cup medal.
To secure Romero’s future and fend off interest from top clubs like Real Madrid, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy needs to extend Romero’s contract beyond its current expiration in 2027. By doing so, Tottenham can ensure that their defensive linchpin remains a crucial part of their squad as they strive to end their trophy drought in the coming years.
