Liverpool have not given up hope of signing Anthony Gordon this summer. The 23-year-old winger has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield as Arne Slot seeks to strengthen his frontline, while Newcastle United looks to generate funds.
In an effort to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSRs), ECHO reports that Eddie Howe’s side has approached Liverpool, proposing a player-plus-cash swap deal for Gordon that includes Jarell Quansah. However, Liverpool has no intention of offloading the 21-year-old defender this summer or in the foreseeable future, especially after he has broken into the first team.
Quansah, who inked a new long-term deal in May, made 33 appearances for the Reds last season. Slot views him as a crucial squad member and thus plans to offer Newcastle a different player to make the deal more appealing. According to TeamTalk, Liverpool is prepared to offer £50 million plus Caoimhin Kelleher for Gordon. They value the 25-year-old goalkeeper between £25 million and £35 million, bringing the total valuation of the bid to approximately £75 million to £85 million.
Despite establishing himself in the Premier League with Everton, Gordon has expressed his admiration for Liverpool. Last month, he praised Steven Gerrard as one of his childhood idols.
“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” Gordon told The Overlap last month. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a god in the city, and he was an unbelievable player.”
Gordon also lauded Mohamed Salah, adding, “My confidence comes from my preparation. I don’t know where it comes from, I wouldn’t say anyone around me is anything like that. I just love learning, and over the years, I’ve developed an interest in psychology. Some footballers prefer to just turn up and play, relying on their instincts, but I love getting into the right mindset beforehand. I saw Mo Salah talk about it — that’s where I took even more interest, because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. Following what they do, you can’t go too far wrong.”
During an international duty appearance on Channel 4’s TikTok channel, Gordon was asked which stadium he enjoyed playing in the most. He responded, “Other than St. James’ Park, it’s Anfield by far. I think because I’m from the city, it’s probably like I grew up watching it. But I just think before the game when they sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’ it’s top, top level.”
Gordon’s potential move to Liverpool could bring a new dynamic to the team’s attack. Slot’s interest in bolstering Liverpool’s offensive options highlights the club’s ambitions for the upcoming season. As the transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on whether Liverpool can secure Gordon’s signature and further enhance their squad.
