A potential transfer for a Tottenham player has collapsed, but there are updates on another deal progressing. According to a top source, next steps have been outlined after club-to-club contacts advanced a second Spurs deal.
Tottenham’s approach to the upcoming season involves significant roster changes, focusing on both incoming and outgoing transfers. Despite securing a spot in European football for the next term, Spurs are looking to streamline their squad by offloading players deemed surplus to requirements.
Several key first-team players have already departed on free transfers, including Ryan Sessegnon, Ivan Perisic, Eric Dier, and Japhet Tanganga. Additionally, Tottenham and Tanguy Ndombele mutually agreed to terminate his contract, which had one year remaining.
In an effort to increase manager Ange Postecoglou’s transfer budget, the club is actively seeking offers for players such as Djed Spence, Emerson Royal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Giovani Lo Celso.
One successful exit is Joe Rodon, who has joined Leeds United in a permanent deal valued at £10 million. Further departures are anticipated, particularly for Spence and Emerson. Spence had been expected to rejoin Genoa, where he spent the latter part of last season on loan. Although Spence was keen on returning to the Serie A side, negotiations over the transfer fee have stalled. Genoa aimed to lower the agreed £8.5 million/€10 million purchase option, proposing a loan with an obligation to buy for £7 million—a deal that would have resulted in a significant loss for Spurs, considering Spence was acquired for £20 million from Middlesbrough.
After extensive negotiations, BBC reporter Nizaar Kinsella reported that the deal with Genoa has fallen through primarily due to disagreements over the transfer fee. While Genoa might revisit the move later in the transfer window if Tottenham reduces their demands, for now, Spurs are exploring other clubs for Spence.
On a more positive note, progress has been made regarding Emerson Royal’s transfer to AC Milan. The Brazilian defender, deemed surplus following Pedro Porro’s arrival, has agreed to the move and is ready to sign with Milan. Personal terms are expected to be straightforward, although the transfer fee remains under negotiation. Tottenham is seeking around €25 million/£21 million for Emerson, but Milan has yet to meet this valuation.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided an update, indicating renewed optimism for the deal. He revealed that new direct talks between Tottenham and Milan have taken place. While no agreement has been reached yet, both clubs appear eager to finalize the transfer. Romano shared on social media: “New direct contact took place for Emerson Royal’s potential move to AC Milan. Emerson gave the green light in May and he wants the move, while there’s still a gap between clubs. Tottenham wants around €25m to let Emerson leave. Talks to continue, nothing agreed yet.”
