Fans disagrees with BBC pundits on praising one English star who they thought is putting up the greatest performance
Fans were left perplexed during the BBC’s coverage of the England vs Switzerland match. In a tense quarter-final, the Three Lions found themselves struggling and ultimately trailing after 75 minutes when Breel Embolo scored. However, Bukayo Saka equalized five minutes later with a spectacular long-range shot.
Gareth Southgate made a single alteration to the squad that triumphed over Slovakia, substituting Ezri Konsa for the suspended Marc Guehi. This change also included a slight tactical adjustment, allowing Phil Foden to take up a more central position on the field. Media reports had speculated that Southgate would opt for a three-man defense, positioning Saka as a left wing-back. Contrary to these expectations, Kieran Trippier retained his spot on the left side of the defense. While the tweak to include Foden centrally allowed him more time on the ball, it did not significantly impact the game.
Despite this, the BBC panel, including Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, and Micah Richards, praised Foden’s first-half performance. However, England fans voiced their dissent on social media, feeling the pundits’ commendations were unwarranted.

It’s been awful.” A third fan commented, “He’s done about as much as me in that first half, and I’m sat at home.” Lastly, a fan noted, “He’s been ok but that was bizarre coverage of him at half time.”
Discussing the formation change, Foden expressed optimism about its potential benefits for his performance. He explained to the BBC before the match, “We changed formation to match what they do and get pressure up the field and to try retain the ball – let’s see if it works, I am looking forward to it. For me, it will be I’ll be more centrally and staying inside. I think it will suit me a little bit better today. If we get the formation right and press right, it will give us a lot of confidence.”
While the tactical shift aimed to maximize Foden’s strengths, the overall execution left fans and analysts divided. As England continues their campaign, the effectiveness of Southgate’s strategic adjustments will remain a point of intense scrutiny.
