“Forget Dani Olmo exploits”- Spurs hit the golden Jackpot with “incredible” Ange signing whose worth is far better than Dani Olmo
As the European Championships draw to a close this week, the transfer market is starting to sizzle, and Tottenham Hotspur appear poised to make some significant investments. The Lilywhites have already made headlines by acquiring Archie Gray from Leeds United for approximately £30 million. Additionally, players like Eberechi Eze and Jonathan David have been frequently linked with the club over the past few weeks.
One of the latest names to surface as a potential recruit for Tottenham is Spain’s Dani Olmo, a standout performer at the Euros. Despite his impressive credentials, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou already boasts a highly talented creator within his ranks, one who arguably surpasses Olmo in value. According to journalist Dean Jones via GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham is among several clubs interested in signing Olmo this summer. To activate his release clause and fend off competition from Manchester City and Chelsea, Daniel Levy and his team would need to come up with around £51 million.
Securing Olmo’s services could be a challenging task, but if successful, Tottenham would add another gifted player to their squad, one who could excel in Postecoglou’s progressive system. Data from FBref reveals that Olmo ranks in the top 9% of attacking midfielders and wingers for expected assists, the top 12% for total shots, the top 14% for interceptions, and the top 15% for non-penalty expected goals and assists, all per 90 minutes. His raw statistics are equally impressive, with eight goals and five assists in just 25 appearances last season, translating to a goal involvement every 1.92 games. For Spain, Olmo has contributed to 20 goals in 38 matches, averaging one goal involvement every 1.90 games.
Tottenham’s interest in Olmo is understandable given these impressive metrics and his substantial worth. However, the club already possesses an exciting attacking player who is valued even higher—James Maddison. Acquired from Leicester City for £40 million last summer, Maddison’s inaugural season with Spurs had its ups and downs. He began the season with eight goal involvements in his first ten league games, but an injury in his 11th match hampered his performance for the rest of the season. In his final 17 league appearances, Maddison managed only five goal involvements. However, it’s important to note that the entire team’s form deteriorated significantly in the latter part of the season, losing five of their last seven games.
Despite this dip in form, Maddison’s overall statistics remain impressive. FBref data shows that he ranks in the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers for shot-creating actions and progressive passes, the top 2% for attempted passes, the top 7% for assists, and the top 17% for pass completion, all per 90 minutes. In his final season with Leicester, Maddison scored ten goals and provided nine assists in 32 appearances. This consistency suggests that his late-season dip in 2023/24 was merely a temporary setback.
Given these factors, Transfermarkt has valued Maddison at €70 million (around £59 million), which is £8 million more than Olmo’s potential cost to Tottenham. Therefore, while securing Dani Olmo would be a significant coup for Tottenham, the club should not lose faith in Maddison. His talent and high valuation indicate that he remains a crucial asset to the team.
