RB Leipzig winger Dani Olmo has emerged as a standout performer for Spain at Euro 2024, attracting significant transfer interest from major clubs across Europe.
The 26-year-old scored the decisive goal in Spain’s 2-1 semi-final triumph over France, bringing his total to three goals in the tournament. Despite boasting 11 goals in 38 international appearances, Olmo has yet to play professionally in his home country. His senior career began at Dinamo Zagreb before he moved to Leipzig in 2020. That transfer was orchestrated by Paul Mitchell, who recently took over as Newcastle United’s sporting director. Now, Olmo could be on the move again, with Premier League giants Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City, as well as La Liga powerhouse Barcelona, expressing interest.
Olmo’s current contract with Leipzig includes a £50 million release clause, which expires on July 15, just one day after the Euro 2024 final. Clubs keen on securing his services must act swiftly to trigger the clause and maximize their chances of signing him.
For Newcastle’s Mitchell, Olmo presents a tantalizing, albeit speculative, option. The Magpies are on the lookout for a top-quality right winger, and Olmo’s profile fits the bill. He regularly featured on the right wing for Leipzig, demonstrating his versatility across the front three. Despite his impressive performances at Euro 2024, with three goals and two assists in three starts, his club-level contributions leave room for improvement. An injury-plagued 2023-24 season saw him limited to 20 starts in all competitions, during which he netted eight goals and provided five assists.
Before his injuries, Olmo had a stellar start to the season, scoring five goals and registering an assist in his first four matches, including a memorable hat-trick against Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup.
Landing Olmo would be a significant coup for Newcastle, given his links with Mitchell and his undeniable talent. His acquisition would be a strong statement from the new sporting director. However, Newcastle faces stiff competition and the challenge of convincing Olmo to join their project.
In addition to Olmo, Newcastle has also shortlisted other right wing targets, including West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, and Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville, as they aim to bolster their attacking options for the upcoming season.
