Newcastle United remains confident that Anthony Gordon will stay at the club despite Liverpool’s interest in the talented winger. Last month, as Newcastle aimed to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules, Liverpool inquired about Gordon’s availability. Although discussions occurred between the clubs, they did not advance due to Newcastle’s high valuation and their determination to retain the player.
Liverpool’s interest in Gordon continues, but Newcastle’s chief executive Darren Eales has publicly stated his expectation that the 23-year-old will remain with the Magpies this summer. When asked if he anticipates keeping key players such as Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Bruno Guimaraes this transfer window, Eales confidently replied, “Yes.” However, some reports suggest Liverpool’s interest might unsettle Gordon, a lifelong fan of the Merseyside club, who could be tempted by the prospect of a move. Yet, Eales remains supportive of Gordon’s potential impact at Newcastle.
Eales addressed the inevitable speculation around players, noting the professional nature of football. “For Anthony, not getting as many minutes as he might have liked in the Euros will only motivate him further. Eddie [Howe] will bring him back, and knowing Anthony’s personality, he will have a chip on his shoulder, eager to prove himself. He’s incredibly driven and this is a crucial year for him. He was outstanding last season, and with the squad we have now, there’s a real chance for him to elevate his game.”
Gordon, who will rejoin Newcastle’s squad later this month after representing England at the European Championships in Germany, had a remarkable 2023-24 season with Newcastle, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists. Despite this, his involvement with the national team was limited to a brief substitute appearance. Eales expressed disappointment over Gordon’s limited playtime in Germany, emphasizing the player’s potential threat as demonstrated last season.
“Anthony was one of the main attacking threats in the Premier League last season. Eddie’s ability to develop players is one of his greatest strengths, and we saw that with Anthony. When he joined mid-season, it took him some time to adjust, but Eddie’s coaching helped him reach his potential. Newcastle is optimistic about their squad and the potential to further strengthen it during the remainder of the transfer window. The sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, completed to comply with PSR before the June 30 deadline, alongside the removal of a £70 million loss from 2021 in next year’s calculations, have positioned the club to invest in new players and bolster the team this summer.
