The headline-grabbing move of the summer, however, was the bold £65 million acquisition of Dominic Solanke. The former Bournemouth striker arrives at Spurs with a stellar reputation, having finished as the joint-fourth top scorer in the Premier League last season. There’s genuine optimism that, surrounded by a more talented squad, Solanke could elevate his game even further, providing the consistent firepower Tottenham has sometimes lacked in recent campaigns.
While many clubs would consider this summer’s business a success and close the books, Tottenham appears far from done. The club is now heavily linked with AS Monaco’s right-back Vanderson, a player who could add depth and competition to their defensive ranks. Vanderson, however, will have to make a significant impact if he hopes to match the valuation of some of his new teammates.
Reports earlier this week indicated that Tottenham is already deep in negotiations with Monaco over Vanderson’s transfer. The French club reportedly expects an offer in the region of €40 million, roughly £34 million, for the Brazilian right-back. Further reports suggest that those close to Vanderson believe a breakthrough in talks is imminent, which bodes well for Spurs as they look to bolster their squad further. Although the potential transfer fee might seem steep, Vanderson’s record—15 goals and assists in 84 European appearances—suggests he could offer good value in the long term.
Yet, despite Vanderson’s promise, he will face stiff competition from one of Tottenham’s most exciting talents: Destiny Udogie. The Italian left-back, who joined Spurs in August 2022 for an initial fee of £15 million plus bonuses, has seen his market value skyrocket. According to the CIES Football Observatory, Udogie is now worth up to an astounding €83 million, or around £71 million—£37 million more than Vanderson’s current valuation and even £6 million more than Tottenham’s new star striker, Solanke.
This dramatic increase in Udogie’s value is far from unwarranted. Last season, the “incredible talent,” as journalist Josh Bunting described him, made 31 appearances, scoring two goals and providing three assists. These contributions, particularly impressive given his age—he was only 20 during his first Premier League campaign—translated to a goal involvement every 6.2 games from the left-back position. Udogie’s performances earned him a nomination for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season Award, a testament to his growing reputation.
Vanderson’s potential arrival will undoubtedly add depth and versatility to Tottenham’s right-back options, but he’ll need to deliver standout performances to reach the heights of Udogie’s burgeoning career. The stage is set for Spurs to continue their upward trajectory, with Vanderson poised to be the latest addition in what could be a transformative summer for the club.
