AC Milan leave door open for Newcastle United to revive interest after Marc Guehi struggles
AC Milan may have inadvertently opened the door for Newcastle United to rekindle their interest in center-back Malick Thiaw. Earlier in the summer, the Magpies were heavily linked with the German defender, showing a strong desire to bring him to St. James’ Park. However, their focus shifted earlier this month to Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace. Despite their persistent efforts, including four separate bids, Newcastle have been unable to convince the South London club to part ways with the England international, leaving them at a critical juncture in their transfer negotiations.
Meanwhile, AC Milan have been active in the transfer market, bolstering their squad with a number of new signings. However, Milan’s manager Paulo Fonseca has made it clear that the club has completed their incoming transfers for the summer and will now concentrate on offloading players. Fonseca expressed his satisfaction with the club’s recent acquisitions, including Youssouf Fofana, and acknowledged the need to trim the squad to manage it more effectively.
“I can only say that I am pleased with our summer signings. Fofana is our fourth addition, and now some players must leave. We have too many, and managing a large squad is challenging,” Fonseca stated. “I don’t want to single anyone out, but I have already spoken with those who are likely to get regular playing time. For others, their opportunities will be limited.”
Milan’s summer signings also include center-back Strahinja Pavlović, who was brought in to compete with Thiaw and former Chelsea player Fikayo Tomori for a spot in the defense. Although Pavlović is still acclimating to his new surroundings after his move from Red Bull Salzburg, his arrival was seen as a clear indication that Thiaw’s future at Milan might be in doubt.
With Milan’s squad now reaching capacity and the addition of Pavlović, there is renewed speculation that Thiaw could be made available for transfer. This situation could present Newcastle with an opportunity to reignite their pursuit of the talented German defender as they seek to strengthen their backline ahead of the new season.
