Newcastle United has navigated a mixed bag of results in the transfer market this summer, reflecting both successes and challenges as they strive to bolster their squad. Manager Eddie Howe remains eager to bring in additional reinforcements in the final weeks of the transfer window, aiming to solidify the Magpies’ ambitions of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
So far, Newcastle has successfully added several key players to their ranks, including Lewis Hall, William Osula, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Lloyd Kelly, and John Ruddy, all of whom have joined St James’ Park since the conclusion of last season. However, their pursuit of a new central defender has been met with frustration, as efforts to land a marquee signing in that position have yet to bear fruit. Nonetheless, the club is reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Marc Guehi this week. Even if this significant signing does not materialize, Howe remains confident in the strength and depth of his current squad.
With pivotal players such as Joelinton, Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, and Nick Pope regaining their form, and Sandro Tonali returning from suspension, alongside the impactful contributions of new signings like Lloyd Kelly and Lewis Hall, the team’s prospects look promising. Howe emphasized the importance of keeping these players fit, noting that the difference between now and the end of last season lies in the availability of key individuals. He mentioned that while they still miss influential figures like Callum Wilson, Sven Botman, and Jamal Lascelles, the return of players like Tonali and Willock could make a substantial difference.
In Howe’s words, “I think the big thing is, the difference from sort of the middle of the season to the end of the season to now is we’ve got players back, and if we can keep them back, we will be stronger. We’ve still got obviously Callum Wilson, Sven Botman, Jamal Lascelles… huge players, missing. That would make us stronger again, but with the likes of Sandro hopefully coming back, Willock today.” He added, “They are massive, massive players for us, and they can make a difference. Harvey [Barnes] obviously was missing, and I could go through the whole list of players that were missing last year, but they will make a big difference.”
Despite Crystal Palace’s reported £60 million asking price for England centre-back Marc Guehi, Howe remains determined to enhance his squad with this addition. Financial limitations, however, may necessitate adjustments to his transfer strategy, particularly concerning the pursuit of a right winger. Chelsea’s rising star, Noni Madueke, is still on Howe’s radar, though a move for the talented winger may need to be postponed until future transfer windows if Madueke stays at Stamford Bridge for the time being.
Howe remarked, “We’re hopeful to be active and to add at least one player to the group. Let’s wait and see. It has to be about quality rather than quantity for us because we have got such a good squad, anyway, that if you’re going to add players to it, they have to push the group to new levels. So that’s what we’re looking for, which is very difficult to find. There are not many players that will make us better.”
He also noted the importance of remaining composed during the final stages of the transfer window, saying, “You have to stay calm. I don’t think there’s any use in any other emotion. We will try to make the right decisions given the conditions that we’re working in. The window has been slightly slower this year. It does seem to be picking up now.”
