Ange Postecoglou might want to consider substituting Tottenham forward Dejan Kulusevski at half-time in their match against Newcastle United.
The first half at St James’ Park on Sunday, 1 September, was relatively uneventful. Aside from Newcastle hitting the woodwork early in the game, neither side created many clear-cut chances until the 37th minute when Harvey Barnes scored to give the hosts the lead.
Despite Spurs having the majority of possession, they were unable to turn that control into meaningful opportunities. Barnes’ goal late in the first half underscored Tottenham’s inability to capitalize on their possession.
If Postecoglou aims to change the course of the game in the second half, replacing Kulusevski could be a crucial move. Kulusevski, who has been tasked with leading the line in the absence of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, has struggled to make a significant impact. He has had just 18 touches and has completed 89 percent of his passes, but has failed to deliver an accurate cross into the box. His performance also includes only one successful ground duel out of four, six turnovers of possession, and a failed dribble attempt, while he has been dribbled past once.
Given the limited options available on the bench, Postecoglou might find it more effective to shift Son Heung-min to a central attacking role and move Brennan Johnson out to the wing. This adjustment could potentially offer a more dynamic approach in the second half.
