Ange Postecoglou expressed satisfaction with Fraser Forster’s performance during Tottenham’s first match since the unfortunate injury to Guglielmo Vicario. The veteran goalkeeper is now expected to take on an extended role as Tottenham’s first-choice keeper, following the news that Vicario, who had been performing well, will be sidelined for an extended period after undergoing ankle surgery. Postecoglou confirmed that the Italian international, Vicario, is likely to be out for “months,” and emphasized that the club would not be pursuing a free agent signing to act as a temporary replacement during his absence. As a result, Fraser Forster, who has been the backup goalkeeper, is expected to remain in goal for the foreseeable future. He began this new responsibility in Tottenham’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Roma on Thursday, stepping up as the team’s No.1 after Vicario’s injury.
The 36-year-old Forster, who has been around for many years in top-flight football, has never been known for his prowess with the ball at his feet, something Vicario excels at. Nonetheless, Forster demonstrated his abilities in other areas, pulling off a series of crucial saves to keep Spurs competitive in the match against the struggling Roma side. There was a brief moment of concern, however, when Forster was nearly caught out while trying to play from the back, an area where he is less comfortable compared to Vicario’s smooth distribution.
Despite this, Postecoglou remained confident in Forster’s capabilities, noting the importance of his experience. The Spurs manager suggested that Forster’s awareness of his role as a dependable and reliable goalkeeper was key to his ability to step in and perform well when needed. “He is an experienced guy, and he probably understands that this is what he’s here for—if called upon, to be that reliable goalkeeper for us,” Postecoglou said.
