Timo Werner’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is shrouded in uncertainty as he continues his extended loan spell from RB Leipzig. The German forward, who joined the North London club in January, has shown occasional flashes of brilliance, but doubts remain about whether Spurs will opt to make his stay permanent.
Despite some positive performances, former Tottenham scout Bryan King has expressed skepticism about Werner’s fit within manager Ange Postecoglou’s tactical setup. King, who was initially surprised by the loan move, questioned whether the 28-year-old forward aligns with the club’s long-term vision. He highlighted that Tottenham already possesses significant depth in wide positions, suggesting that there are more pressing areas in need of reinforcement before the club considers securing Werner on a permanent basis.
Speaking to Tottenham News, King made his views clear:
“I don’t think Spurs should sign Werner permanently. There are more important positions to be sorted out, and they already have enough wide players at the club. It was a surprise for me when he joined Spurs in the first place,” said King. “For me, he’s not a Tottenham player. He’s come into the club, and he’s obviously been professional in his attitude. However, I just don’t see him as a Spurs player.”
Werner’s tenure at Tottenham has been marked by inconsistency. Upon his arrival in January, the former Chelsea forward seemed to settle in quickly, contributing an assist for Rodrigo Bentancur’s equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United. His early performances also saw him score twice in March, playing a role in victories over Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. These contributions led the club to extend his loan for another season, including a potential £8.5 million option to buy.
However, the current season has seen Werner struggle to maintain that early momentum. While he managed to score his first goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the League Cup, his overall output has been far from spectacular. With just one goal and two assists in 15 appearances across all competitions, his form has been inconsistent, raising questions about his long-term place at the club.
Despite these concerns, there have been reports suggesting that Spurs could still consider making his loan move permanent come the summer. However, no official decision has been made yet. As his contract with RB Leipzig runs until 2026, Tottenham faces an important decision regarding Werner’s future in the coming months.
Ultimately, while Werner has shown moments of quality, it remains to be seen if he can secure a permanent role at Spurs. His future hinges on whether he can find consistency in his performances and if the club feels he offers the right qualities to fit into Postecoglou’s system. With other areas of the squad also in need of strengthening, the focus may shift to addressing these positions before any commitment to Werner’s future is made.
