The Alabama Crimson Tide is set to make a significant change at quarterback for the 2025 season following the departure of two-year starter Jalen Milroe to the NFL. After a disappointing 9-4 season in 2024, second-year head coach Kalen DeBoer will rely on an inexperienced quarterback to lead the team. However, his options—Ty Simpson (2022) and Keelon Russell (2025)—are both highly talented five-star recruits.
Russell recently revealed that DeBoer had indicated he might start, but ESPN’s College Football insiders projected a different outcome. They predicted that Simpson, who has waited patiently and gained familiarity with DeBoer’s system over the past year, would be named the starter. ESPN highlighted Simpson’s experience, noting his appearances in 16 games and his pivotal role in a comeback win against USF in 2023.
“Simpson is the last of four quarterbacks signed from 2022 to 2024 still on the roster, and Milroe’s departure gives him a clear opportunity to claim the starting role in 2025,” ESPN wrote. With 381 passing yards, 130 rushing yards, and three touchdowns in limited action, Simpson brings more experience than Russell, despite the latter’s impressive accolades. Russell, ranked as the No. 2 overall recruit and No. 1 quarterback in his class, arrives with high expectations, including being named Elite 11 MVP and Gatorade National Player of the Year.
While Simpson appears to be the frontrunner, the quarterback competition is expected to be intense. If Simpson secures the starting job, he will need to perform convincingly to stave off calls for Russell to take over. The pressure is high for both players and for DeBoer as the Crimson Tide seeks a turnaround in 2025.
