For months, speculation surrounded the New York Mets re-signing All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso, seemingly locking him into their lineup for years. However, as spring training nears, the Mets appear to have shifted gears, closing the door on Alonso’s return and seeking a replacement bat for next season.
Alonso entered free agency with aspirations of securing a $200 million contract, but with limited interest from other teams, a return to New York seemed likely. Despite expectations, Alonso declined the Mets’ final offer of over $68 million for three years, prompting the team to move forward.
The Mets acted quickly, re-signing outfielder Jesse Winker to a one-year, $8 million deal. However, they remain focused on another free-agent target: versatile All-Star and Silver Slugger winner Jurickson Profar. According to MLB insider Robert Murray, Profar has been a priority for the Mets throughout the offseason due to his potential impact on the lineup and clubhouse.
Profar, who turns 32 in February, had a breakout season with the San Diego Padres, earning his first All-Star nod and Silver Slugger Award. He posted career-high numbers in OPS (.839), home runs (24), and WAR (3.7). Known for his flexibility, Profar primarily played left field last season but has experience at first base and second base, making him a valuable switch-hitting addition.
With his prolonged free-agent status, the Mets might secure Profar on a one-year deal, bolstering their roster with his consistency and versatility.
