Packers GM’s Comment Sparks Speculation About Jets’ Next GM
The Green Bay Packers may have unintentionally revealed who could become the next general manager for the New York Jets. Packers GM Brian Gutekunst recently commented on Jon-Eric Sullivan, the team’s Vice President of Player Personnel, who has been interviewing for GM roles. When asked about Sullivan, Gutekunst said, “He’ll be missed,” a remark interpreted by some as confirmation Sullivan may soon leave for a GM position.
Eric Edholm of NFL Media Group noted that Gutekunst’s statement seemed to suggest Sullivan is poised for a GM role. Sullivan has interviewed for only two GM positions this offseason — with the Tennessee Titans and the Jets. Since the Titans have already hired Kansas City Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi, the Jets appear to be the only other contender.
Although the Las Vegas Raiders have also expressed interest in Sullivan, requesting an interview per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, no interview has taken place yet. This has led to speculation that Sullivan might be a frontrunner for the Jets’ GM role.
However, Jets analyst Scott Mason urged caution, suggesting Gutekunst’s comments could have been related to the Titans position and advising against jumping to conclusions. The Jets are still conducting first-round interviews, with finalists yet to be determined.
Sullivan’s extensive 21-year tenure with the Packers, including 18 overlapping years with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, could bolster his chances. Familiarity with Rodgers may prove advantageous, particularly given that the Jets’ next GM and head coach will decide Rodgers’ future with the team.
Rodgers has yet to announce if he will retire this offseason, but his decision could hinge on his meeting with the Jets’ future leadership. The outcome of these leadership appointments may determine whether Rodgers remains part of the Jets’ plans for 2025.
