Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the club in the future. The Argentine, who enjoyed a successful five-year spell at Spurs, remains fond of his time in North London and continues to share a strong relationship with club chairman Daniel Levy.
During Pochettino’s tenure, Tottenham experienced one of their most successful periods in recent history, culminating in a historic run to the Champions League final in 2019. However, just months after that achievement, he was dismissed by the club. Since then, he has taken charge at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Chelsea and is now at the helm of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), preparing to lead them into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be largely hosted in the United States.
Despite the manner of his departure from Spurs, Pochettino has never hidden his admiration for the club and his appreciation for the bond he built with the Tottenham fanbase and hierarchy. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, he opened up about his professional and personal relationship with Levy, explaining how they were able to separate business decisions from their personal connection.
“You’re talking about two different sides, professional and personal, and I’ve always seen the appreciation between both. Daniel is always going to be there, and he will always make professional decisions. After nearly six years together, experiencing all the ups and downs and emotions, it was tough when we parted ways. But we managed to separate the professional side from the personal. Even the day after I left Tottenham, we maintained a very, very good relationship,” Pochettino said.
Although he is focused on his current role with the USMNT, the 52-year-old did not rule out the prospect of one day returning to Tottenham, suggesting that it would depend on the right circumstances.
“When I left the club, I remember saying in an interview that I would like to come back one day. That feeling remains the same, even after five or six years. Right now, I’m in the USA, so I’m not going to speculate on anything, but deep in my heart, I would like to return to Tottenham one day. As Daniel said, it’s all about the timing,” he added.
Pochettino on Postecoglou and Tottenham’s Injury Woes
While discussing his affection for Spurs, Pochettino also shared his thoughts on Ange Postecoglou’s reign as manager and the challenges the Australian has faced this season, particularly with injuries to key players. He acknowledged that such setbacks can significantly disrupt a team’s progress, reflecting on his own experiences at Chelsea, where he also struggled with an injury-hit squad.
“We suffered the same thing at Chelsea from the start, with too many injuries. When you don’t have your full squad available, it becomes difficult to manage and forces you to find different solutions, which inevitably affects results,” Pochettino explained.
While he stopped short of making excuses, he emphasized that injuries can derail even the best-laid plans. However, he believes Tottenham are beginning to recover their form and expects them to continue improving in the Premier League.
“It’s not an excuse, because every team faces these challenges at some point. But sometimes, when bad luck hits, you need to trust the process and find ways to navigate through it. I think Spurs are now starting to feel their rhythm again, and once they regain stability, they will improve and start winning consistently,” he said.
Could Pochettino Make a Sensational Spurs Return?
With Postecoglou currently leading Tottenham into a new era, any talk of Pochettino returning remains purely speculative. However, his enduring love for the club, combined with his close ties to Levy and the Spurs fanbase, suggests that a reunion cannot be ruled out in the future. Should circumstances align, Tottenham fans may yet see the return of the man who took them to the brink of European glory.
