Man Utd fans demand four players are sold immediately after losing Europa League final
Manchester United’s dismal end to the season was capped off by a painful loss in the UEFA Europa League final, as fans turned their anger toward several underperforming stars, demanding an urgent summer overhaul.
Despite both clubs enduring lacklustre domestic seasons—with United languishing in 16th and Tottenham just one place above in 17th—the two crisis-hit giants clashed in an unlikely European final. At stake: not only the Europa League title but also a coveted spot in next season’s Champions League.
The final, held at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, was far from a classic. It was a scrappy, tense affair littered with mistakes and nervy moments. In the end, it was Tottenham Hotspur who emerged victorious, claiming their first piece of silverware in 17 years with a narrow 1-0 win. Brennan Johnson delivered the decisive blow just before half-time, taking advantage of some sluggish defending to slot home past Andre Onana.
For Spurs, the win marked a significant milestone. Head coach Ange Postecoglou, now in his second season, had vowed to bring trophies back to North London—and he delivered. For United, however, the final was a familiar tale of disappointment, defensive frailty, and attacking inefficiency. It was their first defeat in this Europa League campaign, but the performance left little for fans to feel optimistic about.
After the final whistle, the frustration among the United faithful boiled over, especially on social media. Fans took to platform X (formerly Twitter) in droves, calling out specific players who they believe have no place in the squad moving forward.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana, who has come under fire all season for a string of high-profile errors, was once again heavily criticised. Many supporters placed the blame squarely on him for failing to prevent Johnson’s goal, citing his lack of command and poor positioning. One furious fan wrote, “Onana needs to be sold and never play for this club again, and Shaw.” Another added, “Onana needs to be sold in the summer. Cannot command his defence! Awful.”
Left-back Luke Shaw was also singled out for his slow reaction during Johnson’s goal, and for his generally lethargic performance. His lack of urgency in defensive situations was a sore point for supporters, who demanded better from a player with his experience.
But the criticism didn’t stop there. Mason Mount, whose semi-final heroics briefly reignited hopes about his signing, came under renewed scrutiny after failing to make any meaningful impact in the final. Despite being given a chance to impress on the big stage, Mount looked lost and ineffective. One frustrated fan wrote, “We need to get rid of Mount man, I’ve tried.” Another simply called his performance “shockingly bad.”
The most scathing reviews, however, were reserved for striker Rasmus Højlund. The Danish forward, a £72 million signing, once again failed to rise to the occasion. Isolated, ineffective, and bullied by the Spurs centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Højlund struggled to get involved and barely posed a threat.
Calls for his departure were loud and clear. “If we’re serious about a solid rebuild next season, players like Shaw, Maguire, Onana, and Højlund should be sold—even for peanuts,” one supporter posted. Another added, “Højlund should never have another game in a United kit and should be sold ASAP.”
The fury from fans signals a growing impatience with the current squad’s inability to deliver results when it matters most. With Erik ten Hag under pressure and a major rebuild expected this summer, United supporters are making it crystal clear: underperformance will no longer be tolerated, and radical changes are needed if the club is to return to its former glory.
