Chelsea legend John Terry once again couldn’t resist the chance to poke fun at long-time London rivals Tottenham Hotspur – this time with Spurs star James Maddison standing right beside him.
Tottenham recently ended their infamous 17-year trophy drought by defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final. Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike in the 42nd minute sealed a historic 1-0 victory for Ange Postecoglou’s men at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and fans alike.
In the celebratory aftermath, James Maddison cheekily took a shot at Terry on social media. Dressed head-to-toe in his full match kit, Maddison posted a playful jab: “To kit. Full John Terry mode. Anything to say tonight, John?” – a reference to the infamous moment when Terry wore full Chelsea gear, including shin pads, during the 2012 Champions League final trophy lift, despite being suspended for the game.
Terry wasted no time firing back. He replied with a sarcastic dig that reminded everyone of his trophy-laden career: “I remember my first trophy. Ah bless them. Get the tequila out. Great season from you boys, you should all be proud! 16 to go…” He finished with a classic Terry quip: “After that performance I think you have a chance. You just have to live for 900 years.”
Fast-forward to this week, and the banter continued in person. The former England captain and the Spurs midfielder came face-to-face at Maddison’s charity golf event – The Maddison Invitational. The event, organized to support Maddison’s foundation, brought together current and former players for a friendly round of golf.
Terry, who won the Overall Singles prize at the tournament, seized the moment for another tongue-in-cheek dig at Tottenham. Holding the trophy proudly, he said with a grin: “I’m so happy with this. By the way, it’s been a week and I’ve already won the same number of trophies as Spurs.”
To Maddison’s credit, he took the joke in good spirits. He laughed, applauded the Chelsea icon, and shared a warm embrace with him. Terry, perhaps realizing he had pushed the joke far enough, then added with a smile: “Sorry, sorry.”
Terry also appeared on talkSPORT, where he doubled down on his jibe against Spurs while discussing his performance at the golf tournament.
“I’ve had a very good day today,” he said. “I was four-under, I’ve won the trophy and I’ve been met with a bit of heckling and a few boos… but hey, it’s been a week and I’ve matched Spurs’ trophy count.”
The timing of Terry’s latest remarks comes just as Chelsea, his former club, prepares for another shot at European silverware. The Blues are set to face Spanish side Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday night.
Reflecting on the upcoming match, Terry gave his thoughts: “When you’re in these big finals, you want to show up and perform on the biggest stage. Betis are a solid team – it won’t be a walk in the park, that’s for sure.”
He continued: “I believe we have enough quality to win. Yes, we’ve got a young and relatively inexperienced squad, which can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s great for the future of the club. On the other, that lack of experience might show in key moments.”
Nevertheless, Terry remains confident in Chelsea’s chances: “They rose to the occasion last weekend, especially in front of a tough crowd against Forest. That was a high-pressure match, and the boys handled it brilliantly. I think they’ll do it again in the final.”
While Tottenham fans continue to bask in the joy of their long-awaited European triumph, it’s clear that John Terry – ever the competitor – isn’t ready to let them forget the sheer volume of silverware he amassed during his own illustrious career.
