The Magpies are expected to be active in the transfer market following their return to the Champions League, with head coach Eddie Howe set to play a central role in shaping the club’s recruitment strategy. This comes in the wake of the club announcing that sporting director Paul Mitchell will be departing at the end of the season, giving Howe greater influence over player acquisitions.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are preparing to make formal bids for both Mbeumo and Guehi. These moves are expected to be the first marquee statements of intent from the Tyneside club this summer. The report also notes that Newcastle’s transfer shortlist has already been finalised, with a substantial budget in place, and the club is now ready to move quickly to secure their priority targets.
Eddie Howe is reportedly keen to inject more pace into his squad, and Mbeumo is seen as an ideal candidate to deliver that. The Brentford winger has long been on Newcastle’s radar, and sources suggest it would take a fee in the region of £50 million to £60 million to tempt the Bees into selling. Mbeumo’s ability to operate across the frontline, combined with his speed, creativity, and eye for goal, makes him a valuable asset for any top-tier club.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s interest in Marc Guehi is far from new. The club made a strong push to sign the England international centre-back during the January window but were ultimately rebuffed. However, the Magpies are not alone in pursuing their two top targets. Manchester United have also been linked with Mbeumo, while Guehi is drawing significant interest from several clubs across Europe. TEAMtalk transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher recently revealed that Newcastle are currently in pole position to sign Mbeumo, despite competition from the Red Devils. The 25-year-old forward has enjoyed a standout campaign, contributing an impressive 20 goals and nine assists in all competitions, and is thought to be open to a new challenge.
On the Guehi front, TEAMtalk insider Rudy Galetti has reported that Inter Milan are among the leading contenders to rival Newcastle for the defender’s signature. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest are also said to be closely monitoring the player’s situation. Despite Crystal Palace’s recent FA Cup triumph and their qualification for next season’s Europa League under Oliver Glasner, Guehi could still seek a move away this summer, especially with his contract set to expire in 2026 and his stock at an all-time high.
In a recent press conference, Eddie Howe stressed the importance of swift action in the transfer window to avoid missing out on key signings.
“Speed is absolutely vital for us,” Howe said. “It’s something I’ve communicated clearly within the club. In this market, the best players don’t stay available for long. If we hesitate, we run the risk of losing out, and that’s not a position we want to be in.
“We’ll be doing everything we can to get our business done early and decisively, though of course, not everything is within our control.”
