Tottenham to ‘reluctantly’ accept huge Son Heung-min offer
Son Heung-min’s illustrious journey with Tottenham Hotspur could be approaching its final chapter this summer, as the North London club remains open to the possibility of selling their talismanic winger—if the right offer arrives.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the summer of 2025 might present the “ideal opportunity for Spurs to cash in” on the 32-year-old South Korean international, who has long been a fan favorite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Son joined Spurs from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015 and has since cemented his legacy as one of the club’s all-time greats. Over the course of a decade in North London, he has made an impressive 454 appearances across all competitions, netting 173 goals and contributing countless assists—figures that place him among the top scorers in Tottenham’s storied history.
However, despite his iconic status, the 2024/25 campaign marked a noticeable dip in his form. Son managed to score 11 goals and provide 11 assists—a respectable tally, but his least productive season since his debut year in English football. His reduced influence on the pitch has sparked speculation that Spurs may be tempted to move on from their long-serving star, especially given the need for a squad refresh ahead of a demanding Champions League campaign next season.
Adding further fuel to the fire was Ange Postecoglou’s surprise decision to drop Son from the starting lineup in Tottenham’s triumphant Europa League final against Manchester United—a match Spurs won with Richarlison leading the line. Such a move would have been unthinkable just a season ago, and it hinted at a potential changing of the guard within the Spurs setup.
As Football Insider previously reported, Tottenham officially dismissed Postecoglou on June 6 following internal discussions that began earlier in the month. This managerial shake-up only adds to the uncertainty surrounding the club’s direction and the future of some of its senior players, including Son.
From a financial standpoint, parting ways with Son could help Tottenham balance the books as they navigate UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and aim to free up funds for summer reinforcements. A sizeable offer, particularly from the increasingly ambitious Saudi Pro League, could be hard to ignore for both the club and the player.
“From a business perspective, this could be a golden opportunity for Spurs to generate substantial revenue,” O’Rourke explained. “It would take a huge offer—likely from Saudi Arabia—to convince Son to leave North London. But if it helps the club with FFP concerns and supports their summer transfer ambitions, it might be a deal they reluctantly agree to.”
He added that Son, who has always expressed love for the club and its supporters, is likely content at Tottenham and would prefer to stay if circumstances allow. Yet in the unpredictable world of football, loyalty sometimes takes a back seat to financial and strategic considerations.
Spurs Exploring Future Options: Mathys Tel Transfer Talks Continue
With the possibility of Son’s exit on the table, Tottenham have also turned their attention to potential successors—and one name under discussion is 20-year-old French attacker Mathys Tel. The youngster joined Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich last season amid much excitement, but his performances have not quite lived up to expectations.
Despite showing flashes of potential, Tel struggled to find consistency and end product. Splitting time between striker and left-wing roles, he managed just three goals in 20 appearances—a return that has left Spurs hesitant to activate the £45 million buy-option included in his loan agreement.
Nevertheless, Tottenham are not giving up on the player just yet. As Pete O’Rourke revealed earlier this month, Spurs are currently negotiating with Bayern Munich in hopes of securing a “cut-price” deal for Tel. The club remains intrigued by his potential and believes he could still develop into a valuable asset under the right guidance.
