Manchester United are working behind the scenes to secure their second major signing of the summer transfer window, with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo firmly in their sights following the successful acquisition of Matheus Cunha.
The 26-year-old Cameroon international has quickly become one of United’s top targets. According to reports, the Red Devils have been actively pursuing Mbeumo for over a week, with Ineos, the club’s new football decision-makers, leading the charge to bring him to Old Trafford.
United initially tabled a substantial offer for the Brentford talisman — a deal worth £45 million plus an additional £10 million in performance-based add-ons. While this was considered a strong opening bid, Brentford stood firm and rejected the proposal. However, optimism remains high at United, with a fresh, improved offer expected to be submitted soon.

One club that could seriously threaten United’s hopes is Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs are rumored to be lining up Brentford manager Thomas Frank as their new head coach after parting ways with Ange Postecoglou, and if that appointment is made, it could dramatically shift the situation. Mbeumo has a strong relationship with Frank, who helped develop him into one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wide forwards. Should Frank make the move to North London, Tottenham may emerge as a very realistic alternative for the player — one that allows him to remain in London, where his family is currently based.
Despite these complications, United are still considered the frontrunners for Mbeumo’s signature. His pace, versatility, and direct style of play would bring a fresh dynamic to United’s attack, attributes that manager-in-waiting Ruben Amorim reportedly views as critical to implementing his tactical vision. Mbeumo would not only provide width and speed but also goal threat, having played a vital role in Brentford’s Premier League campaigns.
Transfer insider Graeme Bailey, speaking to United in Focus, confirmed that the deal remains “very much alive.” According to Bailey:
“It’s ongoing. Brentford have their valuation, and I don’t think they’ll accept anything less than what Wolves received for Cunha — maybe even more. The two clubs are still negotiating. We know Mbeumo has already let it be known he wants to join United, and they remain the favorites. But Tottenham’s situation adds uncertainty.”
Bailey added that with Thomas Frank potentially taking over at Spurs, Mbeumo may consider staying in London.
“United must be wary. If Frank ends up at Spurs, they instantly become an appealing option for Mbeumo. We’ll probably get clarity within the next week. But until the player is at Old Trafford holding up a United shirt, this isn’t over. The lure of staying in London with his family, plus the familiarity of working under Frank again, could tempt him.”
Still, all signs currently point to Manchester United leading the race. If they can agree on the final fee — likely a gap of around £10 million still exists between United’s offer and Brentford’s demands — the transfer could be completed very quickly.
United now face a pivotal moment. With the signing of Cunha confirmed, all eyes turn to Mbeumo as the next piece of Ineos’ summer overhaul. The deal must be completed swiftly, as United still have multiple transfer priorities ahead — both in terms of incoming reinforcements and outgoing players.
