Newcastle United Renew Pursuit of Anthony Elanga as Transfer Talks Intensify

 

Newcastle United’s interest in Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga has resurfaced this summer, with fresh developments indicating that the Magpies are actively exploring a potential transfer deal for the Swedish international. Although the initial transfer window for FIFA Club World Cup participants has closed, Newcastle’s ambitions remain strong ahead of the main summer window reopening.

 

The 22-year-old attacker was already on Newcastle’s radar during last year’s summer transfer window, but negotiations between the two Premier League sides ultimately failed to materialize into an agreement. Now, twelve months later, with Newcastle looking to bolster their attacking options on the right wing, Elanga is once again being considered as a priority target.

 

Last week, Mail Online reported that Newcastle had reignited their interest in the former Manchester United academy product and had submitted an official enquiry to Nottingham Forest. With Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo reportedly out of reach, Elanga has moved up the list of potential recruits to add pace, flair, and creativity to Eddie Howe’s attacking line.

 

While the early transfer window closed at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, 11 June, the main summer window is set to reopen on Monday, 16 June, giving Newcastle until 7 p.m. on Monday, 1 September, to finalize any potential deal. With this timeline in mind, Newcastle are wasting no time in laying the groundwork for what could be one of their marquee summer signings.

 

According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, representatives from Newcastle United traveled to Nottingham this week to meet with Forest officials in an effort to advance negotiations. Talks reportedly centered around aligning on a valuation for Elanga, who had an impressive debut season at the City Ground following his move from Old Trafford in 2023.

 

However, both clubs currently remain apart on their assessment of the player’s market value. Nottingham Forest are believed to be holding out for a fee in excess of £50 million—a figure that, if agreed upon, would rank Elanga among the most expensive transfers in Newcastle’s history. Despite speculation, Forest are under no financial obligation to sell the winger this summer and remain firm in their stance unless their valuation is met.

He echoed similar sentiments in an interview with Swedish outlet Expressen, stating:

 

> “I guess there will always be scouts wherever I play. As long as I stay focused and do my best in the match… I just keep my focus on what I can control. That’s what I can do on and off the field. I focus on the next day and action.”

 

 

 

Elanga recently featured for Sweden in a 2-0 win against Hungary, where he was deployed in a more central attacking role. However, he did not appear in Sweden’s second international fixture, a dramatic 4-3 victory over Algeria, due to a planned withdrawal agreed with national team boss Jon Dahl Tomasson.

 

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his club future, Elanga remains committed to improving his game and staying grounded amid the growing transfer buzz.
