Newcastle United have rekindled their long-standing interest in Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, a player they nearly signed back in 2022. At the time, The Magpies had reached a full agreement with Watford for the talented attacker, with a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £30 million and a long-term contract reportedly in place. However, the move ultimately fell through when Newcastle turned their attention to Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak, who became available during the same transfer window.

 

The decision to pivot to Isak has paid off handsomely for Newcastle. Since arriving at St. James’ Park, the Swedish international has proven to be a prolific goal scorer, netting 62 goals across all competitions over the past three seasons and becoming a key figure in Eddie Howe’s attacking setup.

 

While Joao Pedro’s path didn’t lead him to Tyneside in 2022, he remained with Watford for another season before securing a high-profile switch to Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2023. The Seagulls made the 23-year-old their record signing at the time, matching Newcastle’s previous offer of £30 million. Since joining Brighton, Pedro has impressed with his technical ability, versatility, and eye for goal—scoring 30 goals in 70 appearances in all competitions.

 

Now, with the summer transfer window open and Brighton reportedly open to selling Pedro for a fee in the region of £60 million, Newcastle have re-entered the race for his signature. The club has wasted no time in registering its renewed interest, viewing the Brazilian as a valuable addition who could further strengthen their attacking options.

 

Pedro, who is also a full Brazil international and teammates with Newcastle stars Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton, is believed to be open to the move. According to a report by The Telegraph, the forward is ‘interested’ in finally making the switch to Newcastle, having been left disappointed when the original deal collapsed three years ago. The publication also claims that Newcastle are optimistic about reaching an agreement soon, with talks progressing positively—though a formal offer has not yet been submitted.

 

Newcastle’s admiration for Pedro stems from his dynamic style of play, positional flexibility, and potential to further develop under Eddie Howe’s management. The club is reportedly willing to negotiate the £60 million asking price and may look to structure the deal in a way that suits both parties.

 

However, Newcastle are not the only Premier League club monitoring Pedro’s situation. Sources suggest that other top-flight teams, including Champions League competitors Chelsea, have also expressed interest in the forward. This could create competition for his signature, potentially driving up the price and intensifying negotiations.
