Leeds United Plan Further Reinforcements After Securing Lukas Nmecha Signing

Leeds United’s summer recruitment drive is well underway, with the club confirming the arrival of German forward Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. However, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, the Championship play-off winners are far from done in the market, with another striker still high on their list of priorities.

 

Nmecha, 26, is set to officially become a Leeds player at the start of July, once his current contract with Wolfsburg expires. The former Manchester City academy graduate will be the first new face through the door at Elland Road this summer, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a busy transfer window for manager Daniel Farke.

 

While Nmecha brings valuable top-flight experience—having made 69 appearances in Germany’s top division since his move from City in 2021—his arrival is seen as just one part of a broader plan to strengthen the squad for the challenges of Premier League football. Smyth reports that Leeds are targeting at least five significant additions to bolster their first-team setup, with a focus on improving the physicality and depth of the squad.

 

The club’s recruitment strategy is centered around ensuring they are not only competitive upon their return to the top flight but are also able to establish themselves in the Premier League and avoid another relegation battle. Nmecha’s injury-hit campaign last season saw him make just three Bundesliga starts, though he still managed to score three goals in around 450 minutes of action—a hint at his quality when fit.

 

In addition to the pursuit of another forward, Leeds are also actively looking to reinforce their defensive options. Negotiations are ongoing with Udinese over a deal for centre-back Jaka Bijol, who has already agreed personal terms with the Yorkshire club. The Slovenian international has been a key figure in Serie A and is seen as a player who can add composure, height, and leadership at the back.

 

Reports suggest that Leeds have submitted an opening bid in the region of £14 million for Bijol, as talks between the two clubs continue. The defender’s arrival would address another critical area for Farke, who is determined to create a more robust and balanced side heading into the 2025/26 campaign.

 

With Farke aiming to reshape his squad significantly, Leeds fans can expect more movement in the weeks ahead. The club appears committed to backing their manager in the transfer market, showing ambition as they look to cement their place back among English football’s elite.
