Report: Newcastle Progressing in Move for Top Transfer Target Joao Pedro as Summer Activity Set to Intensify

Newcastle United are reportedly making significant strides in their efforts to secure the signing of Brighton forward Joao Pedro, with a fresh update suggesting that the deal is now “advancing.” This development, reported by Mark Douglas of iPaper, indicates that the Magpies are gaining momentum in their pursuit of the talented Brazilian attacker.

This comes shortly after transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Chelsea have also expressed interest in the 23-year-old. Despite the Blues entering the race, Newcastle appear to be leading the chase. According to Douglas, the Magpies are currently in “pole position” to land Pedro, putting them ahead of their rivals in what could become a highly competitive transfer saga.

Joao Pedro, who previously starred for Watford before making the switch to Brighton, has long been on Newcastle’s radar. In fact, he was close to joining the Tyneside club nearly three years ago, and it now seems that the long-standing interest could finally materialize into a completed deal.

Encouragingly for Newcastle fans, Douglas reports that activity at the club is expected to “ramp up” in the coming week. After a quiet and somewhat frustrating start to the transfer window, there is renewed optimism that key moves may soon be finalized. Sources suggest that negotiations are progressing well, and a breakthrough in the deal for Pedro could come sooner rather than later.

Adding to the speculation, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported earlier this week that Newcastle had officially entered into formal discussions with Brighton over the potential transfer. Although some reports have hinted that Pedro may prefer a move to London, there are strong indications that he is open to joining Newcastle, particularly given the club’s upward trajectory and growing ambitions under manager Eddie Howe.

In a separate development, Douglas also provided an update on another of Newcastle’s targets — Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. The England youth international is said to be interested in a move to St James’ Park, but Newcastle are aiming to negotiate a fee lower than what Burnley are currently demanding. The newly-promoted Clarets are believed to be holding out for a higher valuation, but the Magpies remain hopeful of reaching an agreement.

With multiple targets in play and transfer talks gaining traction, it looks set to be a busy few weeks ahead for Newcastle United as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
