Just In: Newcastle United Offered Chance to Sign Long-Term Striker Target on Free Transfer as Everton Exit Confirmed

 

Newcastle United have been handed the opportunity to sign a long-standing striker target for free this summer, following an official announcement confirming his departure. Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, once the subject of significant interest from the Magpies, is now available on a free transfer after confirming he will leave Goodison Park upon the expiry of his contract.

 

Both Newcastle United and Everton had previously explored a deal involving Calvert-Lewin. Talks were held last summer over a potential swap arrangement, which would have seen the England international move to Tyneside while promising Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh headed to Merseyside. The proposal was seen as a strategic attempt by both clubs to navigate the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). However, the negotiations ultimately collapsed. Minteh was later sold to Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee in the region of £33 million, while midfielder Elliot Anderson departed for Nottingham Forest in a separate transaction that also saw Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos arrive at St James’ Park.

 

Now, with Calvert-Lewin officially a free agent, Newcastle could once again consider him as a potential option to bolster their attacking options—though that possibility appears increasingly unlikely.

 

Calvert-Lewin Bids Farewell to Everton After Nine-Year Spell

 

In an emotional farewell message posted on his social media channels, the 28-year-old confirmed his departure from Everton, ending a near-decade-long stay on Merseyside that began when he joined from Sheffield United in 2016.

 

“To Everton Football Club and the Evertonians,” Calvert-Lewin wrote. “After nine remarkable years at this club, I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision, together with my family, to begin a new chapter in my career.

 

“This wasn’t something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old. It’s the club that gave me an opportunity, believed in me, and helped me develop not only as a player but also as a person.”

 

Calvert-Lewin made a total of 273 appearances for the Toffees, scoring 71 goals and earning 11 caps for the England national team. His final appearance came fittingly against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on the last day of the 2023-24 Premier League season.

 

“Whether times were good or tough, your support never wavered,” he added. “The roar of Goodison Park will always be one of my fondest memories. I leave with deep gratitude and immense pride, and I hope I’ve made you proud whenever I wore the shirt.”

 

Newcastle’s Striker Search Continues – But Calvert-Lewin Not in Current Plans

 

Despite the availability of a player they once tracked closely, Newcastle United are currently not expected to pursue a move for Calvert-Lewin. Club sources indicate that concerns over the striker’s injury record—something that has mirrored issues with current forward Callum Wilson—have dissuaded them from reigniting interest.

 

Newcastle are in the market for attacking reinforcements, particularly with Wilson poised to become a free agent in the coming days. The 32-year-old has been in discussions with the club over a heavily incentivised extension following an injury-hit campaign that limited him to just three Premier League starts.

 

As it stands, neither Newcastle nor Wilson have publicly confirmed whether he will be staying or leaving, leaving the Magpies with a potential void to fill in their striking department. Alexander Isak remains the first-choice forward, but with European competition on the horizon and a demanding domestic schedule, Newcastle are expected to seek additional depth in the forward line.

 

For now, however, it appears Calvert-Lewin will not be the solution—despite his Premier League experience, proven goal record, and previous links to the club.
