Wolves Boss Vitor Pereira Prioritises Team Bonding Over Pre-Season Results

 

 

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Vitor Pereira has made it clear that results are not his primary focus during the club’s pre-season preparations. Instead, the Portuguese manager is placing a greater emphasis on building what he describes as an “emotional connection” within his squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

 

The Wolves squad recently returned from their pre-season trip to Portugal, where they engaged in two behind-closed-doors training matches. Although they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Santa Clara and were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley, Pereira insists that these outcomes are not cause for concern. In his view, the true purpose of these matches lies in player development, team chemistry, and assessing how individuals respond to the tactical demands being put in place.

 

“As far as I’m concerned, these pre-season games are not about wins or losses,” Pereira said. “What matters most is the process — how the players connect with each other, how well they understand our style of play, and how the young players step up in a senior environment.”

 

With several key first-team players either unavailable or easing back into action, Pereira has opted to call upon a number of academy talents to bolster his squad during the early stages of pre-season. This, he believes, presents a valuable opportunity for younger players to showcase their abilities and for the coaching staff to evaluate their readiness for top-level competition.

 

Wolves are now preparing for their upcoming fixture against Stoke City this weekend, which marks the first of three domestic friendlies to be played in England before the start of the competitive season. While fans may be eager to see strong performances and positive scorelines, Pereira remains focused on broader goals.

 

“These matches are about structure, mentality, and understanding,” he explained. “Of course, everyone wants to win, but right now it’s more important to see how players adapt under pressure, how they react to our instructions, and how we grow together as a team.”
