Newcastle United Submit €30m Offer for AC Milan Defender Malick Thiaw – German Reports Confirm

 

Earlier today, speculation out of Italy hinted that Newcastle United had stepped up their pursuit of Malick Thiaw by submitting a €30 million bid for the highly-rated German international defender. These reports quickly gained traction, but sources closer to the club on Tyneside initially downplayed the claims. According to journalist Craig Hope, while Newcastle have indeed shown strong interest in the AC Milan centre-back and are actively exploring a deal, they had not yet submitted a formal offer at the time.

 

However, the situation appears to have taken a significant turn this afternoon.

 

Sky Sports Germany journalist Patrick Berger has now confirmed via social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Newcastle have officially submitted a written offer to AC Milan worth €30 million for Thiaw. This development signals the Magpies’ serious intent to bring the 23-year-old defender to the Premier League before the close of the summer transfer window.

 

Berger further revealed that German side Schalke 04, where Thiaw developed and made his professional breakthrough, would receive 10% of the transfer fee as part of a sell-on clause that was agreed when the player made his move to Milan in the summer of 2022. Thiaw, who joined AC Milan for a reported fee of just €7 million two years ago, has since grown into a promising talent in Serie A and at the international level with Germany.

 

Despite Newcastle’s formal approach, securing the defender’s signature may prove to be a challenge. Reports from Italy earlier in the day indicated that AC Milan are expected to turn down the initial €30 million proposal. New Rossoneri manager Massimiliano Allegri is reportedly a strong admirer of Thiaw and has been impressed with the young centre-back’s performances during the club’s recent pre-season tour of the Far East, where he featured prominently in games against top sides such as Liverpool and Arsenal.

 

Newcastle’s renewed interest in the 6ft 4in defender isn’t entirely unexpected. Just last week, NUFCBlog revealed exclusively that the Magpies had reignited their pursuit of Thiaw, having monitored his performances closely during recent friendlies. The club’s recruitment team is believed to be convinced of his potential and see him as a long-term solution to bolster the heart of their defence, especially with growing uncertainty surrounding other defensive targets like Marc Guehi.

 

With the Premier League season fast approaching, Eddie Howe and the Newcastle hierarchy are eager to add depth and quality to their back line. The club has already shown a willingness to spend this summer and are expected to remain active in the market in the coming weeks.

 

Whether AC Milan will reconsider their stance or demand a higher fee remains to be seen, but one thing is clear – Newcastle United’s interest in Malick Thiaw is now very much official.
