Newcastle United Could Face Surprise Exit as AS Monaco Eye Kieran Trippier Transfer

 

Newcastle United may be bracing for an unexpected twist in their transfer window as reports suggest one of their most experienced and influential players could be on the move — and surprisingly, it’s not Alexander Isak. Instead, Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco are reportedly considering a swoop for veteran full-back Kieran Trippier before the close of the summer transfer market.

 

The Magpies’ transfer activity this summer has been underwhelming by their recent standards. Pending the formal announcement of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw’s arrival, Eddie Howe’s side will have added just three new senior players. The window has been overshadowed by the ongoing saga surrounding Isak’s future, with the Swedish striker having made it clear he wishes to join Liverpool. While no agreement has been reached, the intense focus on that situation appears to have shifted attention away from potential departures elsewhere in the squad.

 

Now, it seems another key member of Howe’s side could be heading for the exit door. According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Monaco are seriously weighing up a move for Trippier, with the French side eager to bolster their squad ahead of their return to the UEFA Champions League.

 

Trippier, 34, has been a cornerstone of Newcastle’s transformation since arriving from Atlético Madrid in January 2022 — a period that has seen the club evolve from relegation battlers into regular European contenders under their Saudi-led ownership. Revered by fans for his leadership, set-piece prowess, and professionalism, the England international has just one year remaining on his £120,000-a-week deal.

 

However, his role in the starting XI has recently diminished following the emergence of 21-year-old Tino Livramento, who has impressed in the right-back position. While Newcastle are understood to be reluctant to part ways with a player Howe still regards as “key,” the club may face a difficult decision should Monaco formalise their interest.

 

Trippier’s potential switch would not be his first experience playing abroad. He spent three successful years in Spain with Atlético Madrid, winning La Liga in 2021, and previously played alongside current Monaco defender Eric Dier during their time together at Tottenham Hotspur and with the England national team. A reunion in the Principality could appeal to the experienced defender, particularly with the lure of Champions League football on offer.

 

Still, Newcastle’s hierarchy may be unwilling to sanction the move, given Trippier’s value both on and off the pitch. His European pedigree and leadership could prove crucial in a season where the Magpies aim to maintain their status among the Premier League’s elite while competing in continental tournaments.
