Malick Thiaw Set for Newcastle United Switch After Milan’s Late Contract Push Falls Short

 

AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw is in the verge of finalising his move to Premier League side Newcastle United, with the transfer now in its final stages.

 

The 24-year-old German international has been on the radar of several top clubs this summer, and Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri had even expressed admiration for the player, reportedly hoping to see him remain in Serie A. In a last-ditch effort to keep Thiaw at the San Siro, Milan tabled an improved offer worth €3 million net per season. Despite this, the club ultimately agreed to Newcastle’s proposal—valued at €40 million including bonuses—after the player opted for a new challenge in England.

 

Italian media broke the news on Sunday, revealing that Milan had accepted Newcastle’s bid and that the player was set to travel to England for medical tests. Gianluca Di Marzio later confirmed that Thiaw was spotted at Milan’s Linate Airport on Sunday, preparing for his journey to the UK. His absence was notable as the Rossoneri squad travelled to London to take on Chelsea in a pre-season friendly at Stamford Bridge.

 

Thiaw joined AC Milan from Schalke in 2022 and quickly established himself as a reliable defensive presence. Speaking to Gianlucadimarzio.com before his departure, the defender reflected fondly on his time in Italy:

Allegri, when questioned by Gazzetta dello Sport about the defender’s imminent departure, admitted it was a blow but stressed that the club was already adapting to the market reality:

 

> “He was an important player, and it’s a shame he’s gone, but the club is moving well. This is the transfer market, and we’re making sure we’re ready.”

 

 

 

Journalist Luca Bendoni even shared footage of Thiaw outside the airport on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), marking what could be one of the final glimpses of the centre-back as a Milan player.
