Newcastle United’s pursuit of reinforcements in midfield has taken them to Italy, with fresh reports linking the Magpies to Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi. The 25-year-old, who has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs in recent months, is once again attracting attention as the transfer window nears its closing stages.

According to Sport Witness, Newcastle made initial contact last week regarding Frattesi’s availability, although those early discussions were described as tentative and far from advanced. At the time, sources suggested that any move for the Italian international would be “very difficult,” largely because Inter Milan were determined to keep him as part of their long-term project.

 

However, fresh reporting from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport has shed new light on the situation. Inter currently have seven senior midfielders competing for just three starting spots, raising the possibility that at least one departure could be sanctioned before the deadline. While Newcastle’s interest in Frattesi is genuine, the Nerazzurri have made it clear they would only consider selling if their €40 million valuation is met.

 

As of now, no official bids have been lodged by Newcastle or any other club. Inter’s hierarchy appear relaxed about the situation, with Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski viewed as a more likely candidate to leave than Frattesi. Zielinski, who joined on a free transfer from Napoli earlier this summer, has not yet settled in seamlessly at San Siro and could be moved on if the right proposal arrives.

 

Frattesi’s importance to Inter complicates matters further. Despite a mixed relationship with former manager Simone Inzaghi, the Italy international has been embraced by new head coach Cristian Chivu, who considers him a vital part of his tactical setup. Chivu reportedly sees Frattesi’s energy, versatility, and ability to break forward from midfield as integral to the balance of his side. Losing him, therefore, would only be entertained if Inter receive a bid that is simply too strong to refuse.

 

For Newcastle, the potential acquisition of Frattesi would represent a significant coup. Eddie Howe’s squad has been hit hard by injuries and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding star striker Alexander Isak, and the club’s hierarchy is keen to add both quality and depth before the transfer window closes. Frattesi’s box-to-box profile, coupled with his Serie A pedigree, makes him an appealing target for the Premier League side as they attempt to compete on multiple fronts this season.

 

That being said, Newcastle are not alone in their admiration. Several other Premier League outfits have been credited with interest in the Italian midfielder, and Inter’s firm stance on the €40m price tag means competition will be fierce. With less than two weeks left in the window, much will depend on whether Newcastle are prepared to meet Inter’s demands or instead shift their attention to alternative targets.

 

For now, Frattesi remains an Inter player and a key figure under Chivu. But with the midfield battle at San Siro crowded and Newcastle lurking, the situation is one to watch closely in the days ahead.
