Goran Sorloth, the father of Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth, has broken his silence on the mounting speculation linking his son with a return to the Premier League, amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

 

The 29-year-old Norwegian forward, who had a stellar campaign for Diego Simeone’s men last season, is said to be unsettled in the Spanish capital after slipping down the attacking pecking order. Reports in Spain last week suggested that Sorloth was frustrated at finding himself behind both Antoine Griezmann and new signing Giacomo Raspadori, raising doubts over whether he would remain at the Wanda Metropolitano for the entire season.

 

Sorloth, however, reminded everyone of his quality on Saturday when he returned to Atletico’s starting XI and found the back of the net in their 1-1 draw with Elche at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Even so, speculation surrounding his future refuses to go away, with the Premier League once again touted as a potential destination.

 

Speaking to Dagbladet, Sorloth’s father Goran looked to calm the situation, dismissing much of the noise as nothing more than transfer window chatter.

 

“I can deny most of it. It’s a transfer window, and that’s how it is—wild rumours spread all summer and again in January. I can deny that. Of course, clubs are always looking to strengthen; that’s not surprising. I’ve even seen talk about Alexander Isak leaving Newcastle. Many teams have injuries or gaps to fill, and that naturally creates speculation,” he said.

 

Goran was quick to underline that his son remains fully committed to Atletico Madrid, stressing that consistent game time will go a long way in silencing the gossip.

 

“Alexander is an Atletico Madrid player. Hopefully, he’ll start regularly, like he did against Elche. Once that happens, the rumours will calm down a little,” he added.

 

For Tottenham, who are actively seeking to bolster their attacking options under new head coach Thomas Frank, Sorloth has emerged as one of several potential reinforcements. Spurs’ interest comes as they look to add depth and competition in forward areas following a strong start to the new Premier League season.

 

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s need for firepower could be even more pressing. With Callum Wilson set to leave the club at the end of his contract and Alexander Isak’s long-term future uncertain, Eddie Howe is expected to dip into the market for another striker. Sorloth’s physical presence and aerial strength could make him a strong fit for the Magpies, who are bracing for a demanding campaign across domestic and European competitions.

 

When asked directly about the Newcastle rumours, Goran offered a more pointed response, hinting that his son will need to weigh his options carefully if he feels undervalued in Madrid:

 

“I certainly hope Alexander is not satisfied with limited playing time. If he’s happy just sitting on the bench, then he’ll have to find something else to do. The season has only just started. He had a slight hamstring issue last week, but now he is fully fit and ready.”

 

Sorloth’s potential return to England would mark a second stint in the Premier League. His first spell, at Crystal Palace between 2018 and 2020, was largely underwhelming—yielding just one goal in 20 appearances. However, his career since then has followed a very different trajectory. After an impressive loan stint at Real Sociedad, he reignited his reputation at Villarreal, before sealing a £27.6 million move to Atletico last summer.

 

With 24 goals in 53 appearances for Simeone’s side in the 2023/24 season, the Norwegian has proven himself as a far more complete and reliable striker than during his Palace days. That form has naturally attracted fresh Premier League interest, with both Spurs and Newcastle keeping a close eye on developments as the transfer window edges towards its climax.

 

For now, Sorloth remains an Atletico player, but as his father’s comments suggest, everything could hinge on whether he secures regular starts in the coming weeks—or whether the lure of England proves too strong to resist.
