Newcastle’s striker chase takes fresh twist as £50m bid rejected for Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen

Newcastle United’s relentless pursuit of a new striker has taken yet another dramatic turn, with their latest approach for Wolves frontman Jorgen Strand Larsen reportedly being knocked back.

 

After seeing a £40 million bid for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa rejected last week, the Magpies quickly shifted focus towards Wolves’ Norwegian attacker, who has been on their radar since his time at Celta Vigo.

 

Respected journalist David Ornstein revealed that Newcastle had already explored the possibility of a deal via intermediaries, while Midlands-based outlets reported that the Tyneside club were actively pressing to strike an agreement. Early indications suggested that Newcastle were edging closer to Wolves’ valuation, with just £5m separating their proposal and the asking price for the 25-year-old target man.

 

Now, according to the Express and Star, Newcastle have tabled their first formal bid—a substantial £50m offer for Strand Larsen. However, Wolves have wasted no time in rejecting the approach, reiterating their firm stance that last season’s 14-goal striker is not for sale this summer.

 

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has also verified the development, confirming Wolves’ refusal while adding that Eddie Howe is a long-time admirer of the ex-Celta Vigo striker. Downie stressed that Newcastle are “trying very hard” to reinforce their frontline, with club officials aware that time is quickly running out in the window.

 

Interestingly, Strand Larsen featured in Wolves’ 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth over the weekend but endured a frustrating afternoon, drawing criticism for an underwhelming performance before picking up a late knock. While that may be a minor detail, the timing of Newcastle’s bid coincides with Wolves reportedly closing in on attacking cover. Julen Lopetegui’s side are believed to be finalising a £17m deal for Getafe striker Christantus Uche, who is expected to arrive in the coming days.

 

For Newcastle, the hunt for a striker remains the most pressing issue of their summer. With Alexander Isak unsettled and Callum Wilson sold to West Ham earlier in the window, Howe and the recruitment team are desperate to bring in a proven No. 9 before deadline day. Whether they return with an improved bid for Strand Larsen or pivot to fresh targets could define the remainder of their window.
