Tottenham Hotspur are pushing forward in their ambitious attempt to sign RB Leipzig’s highly-rated midfielder Xavi Simons in the closing days of the summer transfer window. However, while Spurs have made their intentions clear with a major bid, the Bundesliga star is said to have outlined significant wage demands before committing to a move to north London.

 

According to The Sun, Tottenham have lodged an official offer in the region of £61 million for Simons, who has reportedly travelled to London in anticipation of finalising a potential deal. Despite their strong interest, Spurs face a financial stumbling block: the Dutch international is believed to be seeking a contract worth £200,000 per week, a figure that would instantly make him the club’s highest-paid player.

 

At present, financial experts at Capology estimate that Cristian Romero tops Tottenham’s wage bill, having recently signed a new contract that puts him on around £195,000 per week. Behind the Argentine defender, the club’s list of big earners includes James Maddison, Joao Palhinha, and Dejan Kulusevski – all of whom earn salaries exceeding £100,000 per week. If Tottenham were to meet Simons’ demands, it would represent a 25% increase on his current contract at RB Leipzig, where he is said to earn around £165,000 per week.

 

The German side, meanwhile, have confirmed via BILD that Simons has been “released until further notice” to discuss his future. His presence in London suggests serious talks are underway, with Tottenham attempting to strike quickly and fend off rival interest – notably from Chelsea, who have also been linked with the Dutchman.

 

For Spurs, the pursuit of Simons is the latest in a series of attempts to strengthen their creative options in midfield. Earlier in the summer, they pushed hard for Morgan Gibbs-White and even triggered the Nottingham Forest man’s £60m release clause. However, Forest blocked the move, accusing Tottenham of making an illegal approach before eventually tying Gibbs-White down to a new long-term contract.

 

Tottenham then turned their attention to Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, but Arsenal swooped in late to hijack the deal, leaving Spurs frustrated once again. The urgency to secure a new playmaker has only grown in recent weeks after James Maddison suffered a serious knee injury during the club’s final pre-season fixture, ruling him out for an extended period.

 

In this context, Simons emerges as an ideal target. Despite being just 22 years old, the attacking midfielder has already amassed 137 senior appearances across stints in the Eredivisie, Ligue 1, and Bundesliga. He boasts valuable European experience too, with 22 outings in continental competitions for PSV and RB Leipzig combined. His early career also included a spell at Paris Saint-Germain, where he played alongside world-class talent – exposure that has accelerated his development.

 

Internationally, Simons is already a regular for the Netherlands national team, further underlining his pedigree. His flair, technical ability, and versatility in advanced midfield roles would make him a natural fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system, offering Spurs both creativity and dynamism in the final third.

 

Should Tottenham manage to secure his signature, it would not only mark a major statement of intent but also provide a timely boost to a squad looking to maintain its strong early-season form in the Premier League. However, with hefty wages on the table and rival clubs circling, Spurs must now decide whether they are willing to break their wage structure to bring Simons to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
