‘Phenomenal’ Tottenham star must push for January exit after what Frank did today
Tottenham Hotspur starlet Archie Gray may soon be forced to make a difficult decision about his future in north London after Thomas Frank once again overlooked him during the 2–1 victory over Leeds United in the Premier League.
The teenager, widely regarded as one of England’s brightest young talents, joined Tottenham last summer in a £40 million deal from Leeds. At the time, Gray turned down interest from Brentford — a club then managed by Frank, who had long been an admirer of his versatility and energy in midfield. However, despite previously praising the youngster, Frank has yet to demonstrate that same faith since taking charge at Spurs, leaving Gray frustrated with his lack of opportunities.
Saturday’s win at Elland Road, of all places, underlined the issue. It seemed the perfect opportunity for Frank to call upon a player who grew up at Leeds and knows the club’s atmosphere and playing style better than most. Yet, Gray spent another full 90 minutes watching from the substitutes’ bench — a sight that’s becoming all too familiar this season.
There’s no questioning Gray’s natural ability. The 18-year-old is an all-action midfielder with an impressive work rate, excellent composure in possession, and a tenacious edge that belies his age. He reads the game well, tackles hard, and has the technical skill to dictate play — qualities that made him one of the Championship’s standout prospects before his move to north London. Tottenham’s hefty investment reflected their belief in his long-term potential, and it’s no surprise the club fought off fierce competition to secure his signature.
Adding to his value, Gray is remarkably versatile. He has proven capable of operating as a right-back, offering cover for Pedro Porro, and has even been used as a centre-back in emergency situations under Ange Postecoglou last season when injuries hit hard. However, this adaptability — once considered a major asset — may now be hindering his progress.
Tottenham’s squad is brimming with depth and quality, particularly in midfield. Lucas Bergvall, who arrived during the same transfer window, has rapidly developed into a key player. Meanwhile, established stars like Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, and Xavi Simons all occupy more defined roles in Frank’s system, making it difficult for Gray to find consistent minutes in any one position.
Despite being labeled “phenomenal” by those who have worked with him, Gray’s playing time has been limited to just 72 minutes of Premier League action this season — one start and one appearance off the bench. In the Champions League, his contribution has been even smaller, featuring for only eight minutes so far. For a player once tipped to earn an outside chance at an England World Cup call-up, this represents a worrying decline in trajectory.
If Frank continues to overlook him, Gray may have little choice but to consider his options in the January transfer window. A loan move — or even a permanent switch — could reignite his career and ensure his development doesn’t stagnate. At his age, regular first-team football is essential, and while Spurs are flying high in the league, there’s little incentive for Frank to alter a winning formula right now.
That leaves Gray in a difficult position: continue fighting for minutes at Tottenham, or seek a club where he can play week in, week out. Either way, he must make himself impossible to ignore again. His talent is undeniable — now it’s about finding the right environment to let it shine.
