“It was absolutely key in that moment the way Mauricio protected Harry,” Perez recalled. “I remember there was a really difficult meeting with the club, mainly around communication and what message should be put out publicly.” At the time, it had been widely reported that Danny Welbeck could be joining the squad, a move that naturally made Kane question his own standing. Perez explained that with Welbeck strongly linked, Harry began to feel that another striker coming in would push him further down the pecking order.

However, once Welbeck eventually signed for Arsenal instead, the club wanted Pochettino to issue a public statement insisting he was happy with the three strikers already at his disposal. Perez revealed that this is where Pochettino firmly drew the line. “The club suggested Mauricio should come out and say, ‘I’m happy with the three strikers,’” he said. “But Mauricio refused. He said it wasn’t necessary.”

Pochettino felt that making such a statement could send the wrong message to Kane. As Perez explained, the manager was worried it would imply that he had actively wanted another striker all along. “Mauricio said, ‘If I say that, I’m giving the impression to Harry that I really wanted someone else to come in and not him,’” Perez continued. “From day one, he was very happy for Harry to stay with us and to take his time to succeed.”

Crucially, that statement was never released. Perez stressed just how important that decision was, not only for Kane’s confidence but for his long-term future. “It was super important to protect Harry and to make him feel, ‘I really trust you,’” he said. “These are the things in management that nobody really sees, but they can define the career of a player.”

When asked whether Kane would have faced significantly more pressure had the statement been made public, Perez was unequivocal. “Yeah, easily,” he replied. “Those kinds of statements are often about protecting ourselves as a club and saying, ‘We’re happy with these guys.’ But then you have to ask, why are you even making that statement? Usually, it’s because you were actually chasing someone else.”

Pochettino himself echoed that sentiment, insisting he never felt the need to justify his squad decisions publicly. “I was happy with those three,” he said. “I didn’t need to make statements because I’m not bothered about what people think.”
