Inter Milan are reportedly setting their sights on Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as their primary transfer target for next summer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. The Italian giants are beginning to plan for a significant change between the posts, as their current first-choice keeper, Yann Sommer, moves toward the final stages of his career.
Sommer, who will be 37 in December, has served as Inter’s reliable No. 1 since arriving from Bayern Munich. However, his contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and all signs point to his departure once the season concludes. Behind him, backup goalkeeper Josep Martínez has faced personal difficulties off the pitch, leaving Inter even more motivated to reinforce the position.
Inter’s Longstanding Interest in Vicario
This isn’t the first time Inter have pursued Vicario. The club attempted to sign him in 2023 during his standout spell at Empoli, but the Italian shot-stopper ultimately chose to join Tottenham instead. Now, circumstances appear to be shifting. The report claims Vicario is “keen to return” to Italy, opening the door for Inter to revive their interest.
Vicario’s Situation at Tottenham
Vicario has been Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper since his arrival and has retained his place under manager Thomas Frank. Despite this, Spurs have endured an inconsistent Premier League season, winning only five of their first 13 matches. The goalkeeper’s recent form has also come under scrutiny—particularly after an error in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham last weekend.
According to Gazzetta, Vicario is currently not experiencing a “good moment” in London, both in terms of form and personal comfort, which has pushed him toward the idea of returning home. His agent has reportedly “reopened communication channels” with Inter in anticipation of a potential move.
Financial and Strategic Obstacles for Inter
Vicario earns around £2.5 million (€2.85 million) net per year at Tottenham, a salary that Inter would be able to manage. However, the more substantial challenge is the transfer fee. Inter would need approval from their owners, Oaktree Capital, to invest roughly €30 million in a goalkeeper who recently turned 29 and is under contract until 2028. Tottenham may also demand more than the estimated figure, given Vicario’s status as an established starter in the Premier League.
Another complication is Inter’s transfer philosophy. The Nerazzurri typically prioritize younger players with a strong potential resale value. Signing Vicario would require them to diverge from this strategy. Additionally, negotiations may be tense: Tottenham’s sporting director, Fabio Paratici—formerly at Juventus—does not reportedly have the warmest relationship with Inter’s hierarchy, adding yet another layer of difficulty to potential talks.

Despite these hurdles, Vicario remains Inter’s “big target” for the upcoming transfer window. With Sommer set to depart and Martínez facing off-field challenges, securing a reliable and experienced goalkeeper has become a priority.
