Tottenham ‘agree deal’ to make PL ‘sensation’ their third January signing; Kolo Muani ‘U-turn’ mooted

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on their third signing of the January transfer window after reaching an agreement to land a highly-rated West Ham United prospect, while uncertainty continues to surround the future of Randal Kolo Muani in north London.

It has been another grim and frustrating campaign for Spurs, who remain stuck in the lower half of the Premier League table and far from where supporters expect the club to be competing. Expectations were high when Thomas Frank arrived in the summer, but the Danish coach’s appointment has so far failed to spark a significant upturn in performances or results. In truth, Tottenham look little improved from the side Ange Postecoglou left behind.

While domestic form has been inconsistent, Spurs have at least managed to produce encouraging displays in Europe. Their qualification for the Champions League knockout stages has offered a rare bright spot in an otherwise turbulent season. However, exits from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup have only added to the growing sense of disappointment around the club.

With pressure mounting, Tottenham’s recruitment team have moved aggressively in the winter market. Conor Gallagher and Souza have already arrived as Frank attempts to rebuild a squad that has been badly hit by injuries and a lack of depth. Spurs have also explored further additions, although moves for Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta appear increasingly unlikely at this stage.

Another forward could still arrive before the window shuts, particularly with Kolo Muani’s future far from settled. Time is running out for Spurs to complete their business, but reports suggest at least one more deal is close to completion.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have now “agreed a deal” to sign West Ham United youngster Elisha Sowunmi, a player widely described as one of the Hammers’ emerging sensations. Spurs are believed to have tracked the 18-year-old for more than a year and have now beaten competition from Celtic and Club Brugge to secure his signature.

The report explains that Celtic had been pushing hard for Sowunmi’s services, racing an unnamed Premier League top-six club for the teenager. That club has now been revealed as Tottenham, who have edged out the Scottish champions and finalised an agreement to bring the promising youngster to north London. Spurs view Sowunmi as a long-term investment and another step in strengthening their youth pathway under Frank.

At the same time, attention is also turning to potential departures. Another Football Insider report, via journalist Pete O’Rourke, claims Tottenham may now be willing to reconsider Kolo Muani’s role and could even cut short his loan spell.

“There are long-term admirers of Mateta,” O’Rourke explained. “It would probably depend on some outgoings at Tottenham. If Kolo Muani was to cut his loan short and potentially move back to Juventus, that could make room in the squad for Spurs to firm up their interest in Mateta.

“There are a lot of permutations. Kolo Muani scored in the win against Eintracht Frankfurt as Spurs booked their place in the last 16, but Juventus are in the market for a striker and have already missed out on Mateta. Kolo Muani had a very successful loan spell there before, so he would tick a lot of boxes for them.”

O’Rourke also suggested Tottenham’s stance may be softening. “Spurs have been quite adamant that they didn’t want anyone to leave, but with Mateta now an option, they might be more open to it. Kolo Muani hasn’t been a regular starter or consistent goalscorer, so a return to Juventus could suit all parties.

“That could then allow Tottenham to make a move for Mateta, but there are so many moving parts that it’s a case of waiting to see how it plays out.”

With the transfer deadline approaching quickly, Spurs face a crucial few days. Another signing looks close, but any late departures could shape whether Thomas Frank gets the attacking reinforcements he still desperately needs as Tottenham attempt to rescue a faltering season.
