Former Darren Bent believes Tottenham Hotspur may need to put their pride aside if they truly want to avoid a disastrous end to the season. In his view, the club’s priority should be survival in the Premier League, even if that means making a short-term managerial appointment that might not excite supporters.

Bent suggested that bringing in Sean Dyche on a temporary basis could actually be a sensible solution. While he understands that many Spurs supporters might not be thrilled by the idea of Dyche’s pragmatic style of football, Bent argued that avoiding relegation must come above everything else. According to him, suffering the embarrassment of appointing Dyche for just a few months would be far less damaging than the humiliation of dropping out of the Premier League.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent explained that if the club truly feel that current boss Igor Tudor is no longer capable of getting the best out of the squad, then sticking with him could lead the team directly into serious danger.

“If you genuinely believe and sense that Tudor’s not the right man and he’s not getting anything out of the players, then you’re almost just walking into relegation,” Bent said during the discussion.

He went on to argue that Tottenham cannot afford to worry too much about outside criticism right now. In his opinion, people may laugh at the club for turning to a manager known for defensive, no-nonsense football, but the real embarrassment would come if Spurs finished the season outside the Premier League.

Bent explained that Tottenham’s biggest issue at the moment is their lack of organisation and defensive resilience. Because of that, he believes the club needs a manager who can quickly install structure and discipline rather than someone focused purely on entertaining attacking football.

“They need a manager that’s going to go in there and just make them organised and hard to beat,” he continued.

The former striker admitted that the style of football under Dyche might not be particularly enjoyable to watch in the short term. However, he stressed that results are what truly matter in a relegation battle. Grinding out narrow victories or collecting valuable draws could be the difference between survival and disaster.

“As I said, for the next couple of weeks it might be horrible to watch,” Bent added. “But if you’re nicking 1–0 wins, getting draws and picking up points, then it doesn’t matter.”

For Bent, Dyche’s reputation for building disciplined and resilient teams makes him an ideal candidate to steady the situation at Tottenham. Throughout his managerial career, Dyche has often been praised for creating sides that are difficult to break down and capable of competing even against stronger opponents.

“Sean Dyche, right now, for me would be the perfect man for Tottenham,” Bent insisted. “One thing he can always do is organise a team and make them very hard to beat.”

Bent acknowledged that many Tottenham supporters prefer an attacking and entertaining style of play, but he believes the club may need to be realistic about the current situation. When a team is fighting for survival, sometimes practicality must take priority over aesthetics.

“I get it, Spurs fans might not want that,” he said. “But at some point you’ve got to say, ‘Do you know what? We just need someone who’s going to keep us up.’”

He concluded by reiterating that Tottenham simply need a steady pair of hands to guide them through the remaining fixtures and stabilise the team.

“You just need someone who’s going to steady the ship and make you hard to beat,” Bent said.

According to him, attempting to play expansive, attacking football at this stage could actually make things worse, as Tottenham have already shown that they can be far too easy for opponents to break down.

“There’s no point bringing someone in who wants to play all this attractive football and get you constantly on the front foot,” Bent finished. “Right now, Tottenham are just too easy to play against.”
