Criticism has continued to pour in after a controversial goalkeeping decision made by Igor Tudor during Tottenham’s heavy defeat, with former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel warning that the moment could have long-lasting consequences for young shot-stopper Antonín Kinský.

During the match, Kinsky endured a difficult opening period between the posts, committing costly errors that put his side under immediate pressure. Tottenham were already struggling in the contest, and the mistakes only worsened their situation. Speaking about the moment, Schmeichel admitted he felt deep sympathy for the goalkeeper, but he also criticised the decision that followed.

“You make mistakes in football, it happens,” Schmeichel explained while analysing the incident. “He was selected to start in goal, but unfortunately the errors meant the team lost any real chance of getting something from the game. Not that Tottenham looked capable of winning anyway, because the overall performance was extremely poor.”

The Danish legend said the most shocking moment came when Tudor decided to substitute Kinsky before the first half had even reached the 15-minute mark. When Schmeichel noticed the match clock showing 14:55 and saw the goalkeeper being replaced, he was stunned.

“I feel really, really sorry for him,” Schmeichel said. “But when you see the clock and it’s not even 15 minutes gone, and the manager decides to take him off, that’s an incredibly harsh decision.”

Schmeichel believes that moment could stick with the young goalkeeper for the rest of his career.

“That substitution will have ramifications for the rest of his football life,” he added. “Every time people hear his name or see him play, they will remember this moment. It becomes a story attached to you forever.”

According to the former Manchester United star, a manager must sometimes protect a player even when things are going badly on the pitch.

“As a coach, you make your choices,” he said. “Yes, the game wasn’t going Tottenham’s way and they were already 3–0 down. But realistically, the team was never coming back from that position anyway. At that point you have to stick with your goalkeeper, at least until half-time.”

Schmeichel argued that removing Kinsky so early could severely damage the player’s confidence.

“For me, that decision has absolutely destroyed him in that moment. Recovering from something like that takes a lot mentally and emotionally.”

However, Tudor strongly defended his decision after the match. The Tottenham manager insisted the substitution was not meant as punishment, but rather as a move to protect both the player and the team during an extremely difficult situation.

“What happened is very rare,” Tudor admitted. “I’ve been coaching for around 15 years and I’ve never had to make a decision like that before. But in that moment, it felt necessary to protect the player and also stabilise the team.”

Tudor explained that he believed selecting Kinsky before the match was the correct call, particularly given the pressure currently surrounding Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and the demands of competing in multiple tournaments.

“Before the game, starting him was the right choice,” Tudor said. “Toni is a very good goalkeeper and I had confidence in him. Of course, after something like this happens, it is easy for people to say the decision was wrong.”

The Croatian coach also revealed that he spoke to Kinsky personally after the match in an effort to support him.

“I explained everything to him afterwards. He understands the situation and why the change was made. Unfortunately the mistakes happened in such a big match, and that made it even more difficult.”

Tudor stressed that the team continues to stand behind the young goalkeeper despite the difficult night.

“He was very disappointed and apologetic, but the whole squad is with him. I’m with him too. In football, it’s never about blaming one player. These things happen.”

The Tottenham boss admitted the club is currently going through a fragile period where setbacks seem to occur in almost every match.

“This was a huge game in the Champions League and we paid the price for our poor start,” he continued. “At the moment we are fragile and struggling, and sometimes everything that can go wrong seems to happen.”

Tudor concluded by acknowledging that the team’s confidence is clearly affected, with even small moments turning against them.

“When you are in this kind of period, strange things happen. Sometimes it’s very difficult to explain. Even small situations, like the ball slipping or mistakes under pressure, seem to reflect the difficult moment we are going through.”

Despite the manager’s defence of his decision, the incident has sparked widespread debate among pundits and fans, with many questioning whether removing a goalkeeper so early in such a high-profile match was the right way to handle the situation.
