Newcastle United appoint Adam Lawrence as new Under-21s lead coach
Newcastle United have officially confirmed the appointment of Adam Lawrence as the club’s new Under-21 lead coach, bringing an end to a summer of uncertainty for the academy side. The position had been vacant since June, when Diarmuid O’Carroll departed to take up a role at Sparta Prague, leaving the Magpies searching for their third Under-21s coach in as many seasons.
The upheaval in the role has been noticeable in recent years. Elliott Dickman previously held the position before leaving, while Ben Dawson also exited the club to join Leicester City under Steve Cooper. During the interim period this season, experienced coach Robbie Stockdale – a former Sunderland manager – stepped in to steady the ship. Stockdale oversaw three games, securing just one win, a thrilling 4-3 victory over Gateshead in the National League Cup, while suffering defeats to Southampton and Chelsea in the Premier League 2 campaign.
With Lawrence now confirmed as lead coach, Stockdale will remain at the club and serve as his assistant, ensuring continuity and experience within the setup.
Lawrence’s background and pedigree
Lawrence arrives on Tyneside with a strong reputation for youth development. The 38-year-old most recently worked at Manchester United, where he was lead coach of the Under-18s. His tenure at Old Trafford was highly successful, culminating in a trophy-laden 2023/24 campaign in which United’s youth team picked up three pieces of silverware.
Before joining United, Lawrence spent eight years at Charlton Athletic’s academy, building a track record for nurturing talent and creating pathways for young players to break through. His focus on both technical and personal development has earned him recognition across English football.
Speaking about his move, Lawrence expressed his excitement at taking on a new challenge at Newcastle. He said:
