Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon has recently been linked with a potential transfer to Liverpool this summer. Gordon, aged 23, made his move to the Magpies from Everton in January 2023. His impressive performances at Newcastle earned him a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad. Since his £45 million transfer to St James’ Park, the skillful winger has netted 13 goals and provided 11 assists.
Reports surfaced before the June 30 PSR deadline indicating Liverpool’s interest in acquiring Gordon. Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, is reportedly seeking to bolster the team’s attacking options ahead of the 2024/25 season. However, despite Liverpool’s keen interest, a deal could not be finalized before July. This was partly due to Liverpool’s decision to retain the promising defender, Jarell Quansah. This figure was deemed too steep, especially considering Liverpool’s need for defensive depth, an area more pressing than their current wide attacking options.
Newcastle’s financial strategy has been influenced by their failure to secure a spot in the Champions League, compelling them to generate funds through player sales. Despite the potential for a lucrative deal, Gordon was not sold before the June 30 deadline as Liverpool did not meet Newcastle’s valuation. Instead, Newcastle opted to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35 million and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for £33 million, helping to balance their books.
Though Gordon only joined Newcastle in 2023, the interest from Liverpool has reportedly caught his attention. Sources from Telegraph Sport indicate that Gordon is highly enthusiastic about the potential move to Anfield. His history of pushing for transfers is notable; he previously forced his exit from Everton by refusing to attend training sessions, pressuring the club to facilitate his move to Newcastle.
Liverpool’s interest in Gordon was initially reported by the Daily Record towards the end of last season. The winger was identified as a key target for Liverpool’s post-Jurgen Klopp era. It was suggested that an offer close to £100 million could potentially persuade Newcastle to sell.
