One significant target for Newcastle this summer is Barcelona’s centre-back Ronald Araujo. According to a Spanish outlet, the Magpies are in a fierce competition with Manchester City and Manchester United to secure the Uruguayan’s signature. Araujo, currently representing his nation at the Copa América, has also drawn interest from Chelsea in the past.
The 25-year-old has been a standout player in La Liga since his debut in 2018, amassing 150 appearances for Barcelona. Newcastle’s financial backing from the Saudi PIF could enable them to meet Araujo’s £76 million asking price, potentially making him one of the club’s marquee signings.
If Araujo were to join Newcastle, his impact on Howe’s squad could be substantial. His presence could elevate the performances of other players, including Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Since his £40 million transfer from Lyon in January 2022, Guimaraes has become a fan favorite at Newcastle. Despite being linked with a potential £100 million move to clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal, Howe is keen to retain his star midfielder.
Araujo’s defensive prowess, combined with his excellent passing ability, could unlock Guimaraes’ full potential. Last season, Araujo averaged 70 passes per game with an 88% completion rate and 4.3 progressive passes per 90 minutes. This ability to move the ball forward effectively could provide Guimaraes with more opportunities to create chances, building on his impressive 15 goal contributions in 37 appearances during the 2023/24 season.
For Newcastle to secure a return to Champions League football, defensive solidity is crucial. Araujo, with his average of 1.3 tackles per game, could provide the necessary stability at the back. His capability on the ball would also enhance Newcastle’s attacking output, offering Guimaraes more chances to excel in advanced positions.
Though Araujo’s acquisition would be a significant investment, his potential to improve Newcastle’s defense and offer a long-term solution makes him a valuable target for Howe’s side. The addition of such a talented defender could be the key to Newcastle achieving their ambitions and solidifying their status among the Premier League elite.
