Tottenham Hotspur may shift their focus to another English striker after it appears they have missed out on securing Brentford’s star player, Ivan Toney.
Throughout the summer transfer window, Tottenham has been keen on strengthening their attacking options. The club has struggled to find a proper replacement for the goals Harry Kane provided before his transfer to Bayern Munich. Additionally, Richarlison has not yet justified his £60 million price tag.
Despite Son Heung-min’s impressive performance, scoring 17 goals in the Premier League last season, manager Ange Postecoglou is reportedly on the lookout for further attacking reinforcements as the new season approaches.
When questioned in mid-July about potential new signings following the acquisitions of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, Postecoglou stated: “Like I said, nothing’s really changed. I’m comfortable. We’ve got a strategy in place about what we want to do. I’m really happy with the two lads we’ve brought in, both obviously very talented but more importantly really ambitious. They’re not here to ease their way in. They want to play and I think that’s great. They’ve brought a good energy to the group and no doubt there will be a couple more additions but I’m comfortable with where we’re at.”
One of the names linked to Spurs is Lille forward Jonathan David. The Canadian international had an outstanding season, netting 26 goals and bringing his total to 84 goals in 183 appearances for the French club. With David entering the final year of his contract, he could be available for a transfer fee estimated between £25-30 million.
Additionally, reports indicate that Tottenham may consider a move for another high-scoring striker. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested that while no formal bid has been made, Spurs are interested in acquiring a new striker and a winger during this transfer window. This interest arises after Tottenham faced a setback in their pursuit of Ivan Toney, with recent reports suggesting the 28-year-old will remain with Brentford.
The situation surrounding Toney has also changed for other potential suitors. Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea have reportedly cooled their interest in the England international. With new signing Igor Thiago sidelined with a knee injury until late 2024, Toney’s future seems set at Brentford for the foreseeable future.
