Newcastle United’s head coach, Eddie Howe, has expressed significant satisfaction with the burgeoning talent of 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi during the club’s pre-season preparations. Howe has been particularly impressed with Sanusi’s performances, which have showcased the teenager’s potential and skill on the field.
Sanusi, who joined Newcastle United from Birmingham City’s academy in the previous summer, has demonstrated remarkable progress over the past year. Transitioning swiftly from the Under-16s to becoming a promising presence on the edge of the first team, Sanusi’s rise has been nothing short of impressive. His ability to make an impact was on full display during recent matches. In Newcastle’s commanding 4-0 victory over Girona on Friday, Sanusi was introduced as a substitute at half-time and immediately made his presence felt with a lively and energetic display down the left wing. He continued this strong form the following day, contributing significantly in Newcastle’s 1-0 win against Stade Brestois.
The young England Under-17s international officially signed his first professional contract with Newcastle at the end of the 2023-24 season, marking his 17th birthday with a significant career milestone. Despite his youth, Sanusi has already drawn considerable attention from Howe, who sees great potential in the winger. Howe is keen to integrate Sanusi into the squad for the upcoming season, emphasizing that it is too early to consider sending him out on loan. Instead, Howe is focused on honing Sanusi’s talent, helping him to further develop his technical skills and physical attributes.
Howe acknowledged that while Sanusi has shown great promise, there are still areas that require refinement. “I thought he did well [against Girona],” Howe said, recognizing the teenager’s potential. “However, for someone of his age, there are still tactical aspects to be learned and improvements to be made in terms of physical strength. We need to build him up to ensure he’s robust enough to meet the challenges of the Premier League.”
Looking ahead, Sanusi is expected to take on a more prominent role with Newcastle’s Under-21s team, where he will have the opportunity to further develop his skills while continuing to train with Howe and the first team. His progress will be closely monitored as he aims to make a lasting impression in the senior squad.
