In contrast, the absence of Pope in late February of the previous season had a noticeable impact on Newcastle’s defensive statistics. Without him, the team conceded an average of 1.7 goals per game and had an xG against of 1.7. During this period, only Sheffield United and Luton had worse xG against metrics, both standing at 1.9. Despite Newcastle finishing the season in seventh place, the team’s xG against remained at 1.7, highlighting how Pope’s presence is crucial to maintaining defensive solidity.
